The stringer video thread could have evolved into a pretty good discussion of technique for uphill. There's a lot of thought on the subject. All the hellraisers coulda put up some good suggestions, and examples. Put up, or shut up, ya knowI generally get involved in one of these threads for suggestions, and the input from others. And I add my feeble attempt to show what I do to solve the problem. You guys oughta let 'er rip, and see what shakes out"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Ive read on this site and elsewhere that 7018 1/8 inch rod could run at 90 to 110 amps. Some like it hotter I guess but Lanses point of running uphill helps heat things up. As far as his rant, he was way to polite the first time around and should have said STFU to begin with as the weldors here arn't baking sugar coated cookies.

Reply:I have been working on my 3g stick for a while now and have been finding and digging all of the info I can, anyway in a conversation with guy I used to play hockey with who owns a fab shop and has run the 3g test 30 some times told me he runs his coupon at 95 amps. (7018 1/8 vert up)I have practiced a little bit with a Miller inverter and I have it set just under 100 amps for my practice. ( not digital)I am no way an expert just an old fart that wants to pass my 3g before I get much older, getting hard to see as it is.I think it is unfortunate how the other post went way out of shape
Reply:Since farmersamm went and tried it, here is me experimenting vertical up at 125 amps (much higher than normal for me).Had some very old 7018 1/8" (rusty on the ends - LOL)Didn't have a thick enough backer so it warped pretty good - but it worked.I take bad pics so here is the rundown:One terrible restart on capUndercut was not a problem - wets out good at that ampCap height seemed ok but sides not very straight Stringers were actually easier compared to running colderA little hard to get small spacing on a weave since I was going up fasterOverall, with practice I think I could get used to the extra amps on heavy plate. Reply:On thicker material it requires more amps. I feel that 95amps would be insufficient for good penetration on anything thicker than 3/16. You can tell if the penetration is sufficient by looking at the undercut ahead of the puddle, the finished height of the bead, and how the toes wet in.Stick becomes easier the thicker the plate, for me at least. More metal to soak up the heat. Guys who are very good at it are comfortable at any thickness. I simply don't weld enough to become one of the really good ones.Probably the most forgiving uphill rod is 6010 because it's a fast freeze rod with no slag to speak of. You can control the heat input by simply withdrawing the arc from the puddle.Dunno that I really thought it was the best way to do it, but..... I saw a guy do his uphill with 5p by literally blowing thru the material, establishing a keyhole, and building the keyhole up as he went, stacking the filler. I'm not a pipeliner, and I never work with 6011 or 5p, so I don't really know if this is the right way to do it. It sure seemed an awful slow process. The guy took forever to advance the weld. I suppose there wouldn't be any other way to do an open root uphill weld, but this was a FILLET joint on around 3/16 material"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Originally Posted by LanseYes, in my video, at 90-something amps, I was defiantly on the low side, but thats how I learned to run it, and it can defiantly be done that way. Uphill DOES heat things up, once your plate gets warm, and thank you for understanding Theres nothing wrong with running more, or less amps... Whatever works for you and puts out a solid weld. Also worth noting, is that my welder runs a little hot... That 90-whatever was probably about 5 more than advertised... Thank you! *THIS* is what I was going for. Glad the video helped you This isnt bad, and you're off to a great start. Its very consistant, which is excellent and hard-to-do... Then there's all that ready made storage that comes stock. You might have to replace the existing counters, but you can make do with what came stock. Most also come complete with a miniature exterior stock door ( ie Window) and some even have a full man door installed. If you are really lucky yours has the option to expand into extra space like the living room/dining room if needed. The wife might be a bit cranky, but you can over come this by explaining you did it so she doesn't have to cook anymore since you'll be eating out every night. ( This also opens up that useless dining room space for even more shop space....)

I've watched several of his videos on youtube and I have learned from them maybe he isn't perfect but who is? The only kind of welding I've actually been taught by an instructor is tig and that was just on carbon steel pipe. I've pretty much self taught myself from practice and reading articles along with watching videos stick and mig, I even passed a mig test for welding bumpers for a major company. Even if somebody don't make an absolute perfect weld in a video hey at least they help some people get the general idea and technique of it. I joined this site to show off my work and I do welcome any criticism or suggestions on how to weld and fabricate better. I'll take your 2 cents but I won't be run down like people done him thats just stupid.
Reply:Dave I was just messing with you after reading your description However I was hoping to see some welds from anybody at what ever amps they wanted to run them at, it was mentioned above that this could be a good post, for many to learn from and swap techniques. Just sayin
