Last year I installed a new 80 gallon air compressor in my shop.  I wanted to put an automatic drain on it.  The Wilkerson automatic drain from Grainger's (item # 4KT04) looked adequate, and was less expensive than the electric drains.  This unit works off of changes in air pressure.  It opens every time the pressure drops 10 PSI.  Unfortunately, I found out after installing it that it only opens for a fraction of a second.  Not nearly enough, even in the very dry climate that I live in.  There is no way to adjust it to stay open longer.Even with the automatic drain, I still had to drain the tank manually.  I recently replaced it with an electric drain from ASCO.  I can program the open time, and how frequently it opens.  It works great!
Reply:Thanks for the info, I will be upgrading compressors soon and in my high humidity environment (Florida) an automatic drain is in my plan.Old farm boy type welder/fabricator
Reply:my tank never gets to 10psi so that type would never work for my setup. as i keep my tank at presher at all times, it takes too long to refill to make it do it every time i want to use it, so i just throw the shut off valve where air exits the tank at night and leave it on. i instaled a manual drain in place of the screw type that comes on them at they always end up getting crud in the threads and dont work too well, this one is sold in a kit with an extention pipe to make acces easyer also. its worked well for me but is still a manual system.i also keep the tank at presher to reduce the work load on my pump, thats a lot of pumping just to refill the 60 gal. tank. Reply:yep i did misunderstand, i have seen the ones that only open with a full presher drain, never seen one that opend with just a 10 psi drop, in therie it should do the trick.(if it stayed open a bit longer i guess) i wonder if the time delay is set wrong on yours or if its all of them or even if its ajustable, might be werth contacting the manufacturer ???i have a lot of moisture here so i intend to add a water seperator between my pump and tank. another one of thouse projects i never seem to get to. i'll do that when i move the compresser up into the atic i guess. supose the only question now is when i'll get around to that one.LOL summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:How often are you guys draining your compressor? I moved to MN from CO and I did it maybe 3 times in 4 years in CO & Not even a tablespoon of water. I am afraid to open the drain valve here. I may flood the house!Grant
Reply:Where I live, West Texas, the average humidity in the summer is about 15-20%.  Even though it's very dry, I still get water in my tank.  Once, a line burst and the compressor ran for two days (I was out of town).  When I found it, I drained about 1/2 gallon from it.
Reply:I just bought two of these items for both my compressors. 60 gal US general and 8 gal Harbor Freight one pictured in my valve cover powder coating thread.http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=46960The problem is that the small compression fitting that fits onto the regulator pressure sensing line does not fit on my compressor. I have searched everywhere but can't seem to find the right compression fitting. I thought it would have been a 1/4" fitting like everything else but it is not. It is just a hair smaller and a very odd size. Do compressors have their own sizes? Where can I get this fitting from?
Reply:I buy a drain for a truck air tank for about $6.00.  It has a cable on it you pull.  1/4" pipe thread.  Put the valve in the bottom, pull the cable once a day.   Cheap and simple like me.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The HF one is automatic. I tend to get so caught up with work that its nice to not have to remember too many shut down procedures at the end of the day.
Reply:MUGBUGits a rubber lizerd from wally world. i do have a few steel ones around though. the rubber ones are filled with some kind of plastic beads to make them strechy and squishy. lots of fun for the hole family   but if ya get a hole in them you better get it out of the house or the wife will kill ya for the mess it makes. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:I have an air compressor with an 80 gallon tank. I usually shut the power off and drain it about once a month. I usually get a pint or two of water out of it. I took the threaded bung out of the side once and measured the thickness of the metal. It's about 1/4" stock.  I figure it will outlast me. I'm certain that there are lots and lots of air compressors out there that are never drained.....I wonder where all that water goes?Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
