Rev 1 of a rocket stove.  I already have 3 changes for the next rev (the first not painting the grill).  I also plan to hing the grill or change the shape (so it has a medium-sized hole in the middle of it).  I also plan on shortening the feed... and possibly adding removable legs.No pics on the general assembly, but I am in the process of making a youtube video on it. Reply:It would be excellent if your next stove design borrowed some design elements from those Henry kid vacuums.
Reply:Can't wait for the video John.  Looks good! "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn.... If I can't light up, I'm gonna light out!"-JodyIdealarc 250 "Fatman"MM 252MM 211 "Little boy" Victor Torches
Reply:I've never seen a stove like that, very cool!
Reply:I would definitely put some wider legs on it, kids will have it tipped over in no time, hopefully not on their feet.I do like the design though.miller... 225g, s32p, 250x, 304, 12vs, MSW41     victor o/a thermal dynamics cutmaster 50 lenco panel spotter        hobart hf-boxG3 Farms.....raising cattle, hay, kids and hell, ...oh yeah I'm a fire sprinkler contractor by trade.

Reply:Wow, weldingweb hasn't been updating me with the comments.  Sorry I didn't respond to all of them, I didn't know about them.Version 2, which I hope to work on some time this week should incorporate the following changes:1.  Hinged grill2.  No paint on grill3.  Removable legs (will fit in the middle for storage)4.  Angled feed tube so that gravity helps keep the fire going...  still trying to decide if I should go 30 or 45 degrees.I thought of another improvement I thought.... but can't remember what it is right now.The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:Excuse my ignorance but why do you burn the fire in a tube within the barrell?Would it be easier to burn it within the barrell? Also what 'barrells' are they? I don't think what we keep gas in for BBQs in Australia are that thin walled.

Reply:Great job. Your stove is one of the nicest I've seen. I attended a Scout training a few months back and they were cooking on them and I was amazed how little fuel was required. I think a few of these stoves would make a great troop project. Thanks for sharing.

Reply:I do use vermiculite to prevent rapid cooling of metal pieces (leaf spring Steel) when I want to anneal them prior to shape and grind them in order to make knives... I could come handy also for any kind of cast iron welding I suppose (provided is small enough).I will also check if our vermiculite has chances of being contaminated with asbestos... thanks for the heads up.And for the stove... great job of course!Mikel
Reply:The stove is very nice looking. Good build! The chimney seems a little short so perhaps you are not getting the proper draft. Also the shelf for the sticks looked a little long so perhaps you are preventing the embers from laying at the bottom of the combustion chamber?Perhaps you already know but have you checked out the dimensions for how to make a rocket stove as efficient and clean burning as possible? This is from the guy who invented the rocket stove:http://www.aprovecho.org/lab/index.p...=22&format=rawSome other information on heating and cooking stoves:http://www.aprovecho.org/lab/pubs/arcpubs

Reply:If you can melt the pearlite you have one hot stove.http://www.myheap.com/chapter-1-mate...-make-irc.html
Reply:Perlite has a melting point around 1250 – 1350 ° C, which is in excess of 2,000 ° F. Just a tad less than Vermiculite.Perlite stays crunchy when you add milk, unlike Vermiculite that gets soggy.Last edited by Oldendum; 04-22-2013 at 03:33 PM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Originally Posted by Mr. MooseIt bears mentioning that a lot of the vermiculite in the United States is contaminated with a particularly ugly form of ASBESTOS.  If you are interested in learning about the details and what it can do to you, just google Libby Montana and asbestos deaths...  BE CAREFUL and DO YOUR HOMEWORK when you're using vermiculite for ANYTHING.
