i want a mig but a tough portable one. if i had to can i run this off a tig miller dx200 ? is there any other ones to look at  or brands ?
Reply:Not sure if one of the samll inverter tigs has enough power or duty cycle to run a VS feeder. You do understand that a VS feeder running off a CC power source has some issues right? It will not run short circuit mig well since the feeder can't adjust the speed fast enough to mimic CV. Usually these are run in CC mode with large wire FC in spray mode to lay down lots of material for heavy steel. To use solid wire in short arc, what most people typically think of as "mig", you need a CV power supply. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Looks like DSW beat meI amnot familiar with the tig, but it should work off any DC welder.  Make sure you unhook it before running AC or HF.Bruce DeLaetHeavy Equipment Mechanic and Welder1948 SA-200 short hood1949 LincWelder 1801963 SA-200 red faceMiller S-32-P

Reply:Something portable you can pick up and carry into the building would say either the Passport or the newer Multimatic 200 from Miller. On 230v power, they will do 3/8" material, but duty cycle is limited. For all practical purposes the Multimatic is what you are describing, a small portable inverter power source that can do both CC for stick/tig and CV for wire. The Passport is strictly a small inverter mig. Some of the new Thermal arcs might also fit the bill. I haven't looked that close at one yet personally. The suitcase would be the thing if you have an engine drive. Here you'd have much greater output available thru the suitcase. Best bet would be to run it in CV mode if the engine drive is capable..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Actually, I feel a suitcase is a great choice even in a shop situation. I used to do work on dump trailers, and I can easily carry a suitcase inside and weld away."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
