I need a tool, but I don't know what it's called. The metal skid plates under most ATV's have mounting holes that you screw through to attach the plate to your atv. These holes are punched and or pressed and recessed. They are very clean holes that have a gradual slope and then a flat spot where the screw head meets it.What is the tool to use to achieve this?I am hoping I can put it in my 50ton press to use.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Don't know what you'd call it, other than a punch/die.
Reply:I'll bet your looking at a set up that is pretty much limited to the production environment where they can afford to tool up for that. You can get puches and dies for the ironworker, but first you'd need to own the machine. I've also seen individual punch and die holders for use in presses but can't recall the brand name. Down at the local steel supply they have the punches for about $45.00 a pop. That doesn't include the die. Not much throat depth with that either, About three inches maybe. Then there are the electric over hydraulic punches. They look something like a large drill motor with a base. You'd till have to buy at least one punch and die. Not any throat depth with those either. Then the recess with the washer face would still be a separate press function. Lot a calcs for the shrinkage and all associated with that part. Sounds fun but oogly. If you could come up with the right combo of punch and die you just might be able to fab up the rest for a one or two step operation. Interesting.

Reply:I bet you could get away with a countersink made for steel. They cost about 20.00. I'd bet micro hit the nail on the head though.Last edited by MB2005; 07-19-2007 at 09:56 PM. You only need to be 2% smarter than what you are working on.Lincoln pm140hacksawa big hammer |
