Well after today Im almost nuts with this DYNASTY............I  have welded 50 beer cans with my Lincoln Sq. wave and they come out cherry.....Tried with the Dynasty today and was so pissed I couldn't talk.........it would burn holes from arc wander and just plain be crappy no matter where I set the thing......with a 1/16 Cereated tungsten what do you Dynasty beer can welders set this thing?  I would like to know what PASSENGER  sets his Dynasty to when he welds Beer Cans......HELP....  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:I would check with shovelon on that. he seems to know the Dynasty machines on Aluminum better than just about anyone.   I haven't ever tried the beer can weld.  what kind of settings did you use on the transformer ,tungsten and filler diameter, amps etc... ???Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:No better machine than a good old sinewave tranny for thin stuff. If it were me I would make a beer can program, perhaps #9?  Return it back to default parameters. Push amps button, then gas/dig button to get to advanced settings. Find waveshape and switch softsquare to tri-wave or sinewave, find tungsten and change size to .02 or .04 and you have a program mimicking a tranny tig. Remember to push amps then gas/dig to save and return to panel. You can back off htz and balance later if you wish.I always use needle sharp red or blue tungstens and as small as I can get away with. I got some .040 and they work well.  Or grind a 1" long taper on a bigger tungsten.1100 rod flows like solder too.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:I get drinking beer. I get welding things in exchange for money which can be exchanged for (amongst other things) more beer to drink. I don't get welding beer cans. Beyond impressing the easily impressed/people that can't weld cans what practical purpose does it serve?

Reply:Hmmm, i like the way this threat is go-ing...What can you weld from beercans and sell for money?Oh, i borrowed this photo from www.reasonstodrinkbeer.com
Reply:Well I kinda figured out what the problem is with me and the Dynasty.......All these years with the Square wave machine and only a Wave Balance Adjustment and now with the Inverter and Independent AC Amperage Adjustment to deal with I am like a kid with a whole panel of BUTTONS and KNOBS......I have been over adjusting this thing big time.....Rather than read the instructions that say MOST jobs can be completed with 1:1 Ratio   I have been going nuts setting both EN and EP  by large amounts every couple beads.....I had the start amps set so that with a larger tungsten it would light off better but when I switched to a smaller  tungsten it was too much.......I got all that fixed and will give it a try tomorrow......Gotta be better..........Right?   Lol  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:Got a call from Shovelon today and it was really fun for me to talk to a guy that isA no nonsense shop owner that knowsHis stuff about the Dynasty 350s. We talked About all kinds of stuff and the reason For the call kinda dropped by the wayside.Seems like we got along pretty good and I'm looking forward to our next conversation  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:Im not sorry I bought it by any means.....and I am using it full time now. I pretty much believe my low amp arc wander problem is coming from the Tungsten prep......For years I used a belt sander to dress my tungsten's and never had an issue. Now that I have this Dynasty it's a whole new ball game......Their really critical when it comes to Tungsten prep especially at low amp settings.....I bought a tungsten Sharpener but really haven't broken my habit of using the belt sander yet.....I welded a batch of Lift parts this morning and they came out sweet so I figure the arc wander from the small tungsten sizes is due to my belt sander and will use the diamond wheel next to see......Last edited by B_C; 12-12-2012 at 06:08 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:Hmmmmmm I think learning  the difference between my old machine and this Dynasty 350 is kicking my butt.......I can weld beer cans with the Transformer with no problems sharpened red tungsten and just weld it up....I have gone through 10 cans trying it with the inverter and I'm almost nuts........Starts off fine then I get arc wander......No matter what CFH Argon flow I use or tungsten type, used BLUE 3/32sharpened with Diamond wheel sharpener, sharp, and with a flat spot,  starts off good then after about an inch I get the arc wander and Im done.......Last edited by B_C; 12-13-2012 at 05:55 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:Just now talking with Terry and I never gave it much thought before but my cans have always been dry inside and these donner cans from my machine shop account are still fresh from the guys drinking beer and have some left inside......Terry thinks I need to punch a hole in the bottoms so they can't OUT GAS........Hmmmmmmmm  that makes sense maybe the arc wander is from the argon blowing away from the heated beer inside the can......Gotta try it...  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:This Dynasty  makes welding aluminum a pleasure, that's really why I'm sticking it out with the beer can deal....Because it does weld so nice...These lift parts were done with the Dynasty and I love the way they look....So does the customer and that's what makes me happy.....Last edited by B_C; 12-13-2012 at 06:14 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:Hi all, arc wander......hmmmm.....electricity always goes to the best electrical conductive path, so when you have the amps turned right down, any bad contact like dirt on the surface is sure to make a poor conductive path.Perhaps the foil that Zap "welded" is a good example of clean prepping.......I hate to think that he didn't wire brush with a stainless steel brush and didn't use acetone to clean the oxide off the new metal, and also back purged the sheet.....LOL.All this leads me to wonder, if you can weld alluminium foil, what is the metal content?....is it pure alluminium or a special mix to enable it to be rolled out that thin?I sometimes wonder if you need the temperature of 6,000 deg C from a Tig process to weld alluminium that melts at about 600 deg C.The very thinness of the foil means the heat at the weld zone is not being conducted away fast enough to make the weld point virtually cold. The fact that an arc temperature is 6,000 deg C means you can't make it lower but you can make it smaller in volume, so I expect you could use the car battery set-up to do a weld for that thin a material if the occasion arose, which is the same as being very adept at using a meat cleaver to do delicate brain surgery...LOL.....if the occasion arose, likie if you were stranded on a desert island and only had a meat cleaver or a machette to work on a person who had a life threatening head injury.I've toyed with the idea that for very small work you need a very small torch, probably have to do a home brew to get it to that size, but I also think that the cup on the end of the tig torch could also be the answer to small delicate work, so that if the cup was a small diam the argon would be concentrated around the tungsten and so keep it from burning away when the end has been thinned to a fine point. My thoughts are that if you super cool the tungsten by concentrating the argon close to it,  it would not "wear" away at all, and so maintain it's pristine point that you start off with, but the arc wouild still be at the point and still obcenely hot.I would also wonder that if you were Tig welding in outer space, in a pure vacuum, would you get a perfect weld without Argon, or would the Tungsten burn away due to not having a cooling gas to keep it cool?I have to further wonder what would be the result if you passed the Argon through a cooling coil immersed in liquid nitrogen ( or even just a canister of dried ice....CO2) so that you get a super cooled gas at the Tig torch cup and so super cooling the tungsten in the process.....there has to be a diffence in the weld result if this is tried. You can get liquid nitrogen quite easily, and dried ice is even easier to get, and even plain old ice cubes should show a difference.....even standing an Argon bottle in a bucket of ice cubes might make a difference when the ambient temp is 30 deg C.If this has no affect on the weld process, what would be the result if you went the other way and the Argon was pre-heated before it reached the Tig cup?Either of these methods are easily experimentd with, and if the cold one prolonged the life of the Tungsten, then it's all to the good.Ian.

Reply:For the cans I use a long taper pin point 2% Lanthinated  3/32 tungsten Have used 2% Thoriated 1/16  tungsten sharp.....Even tried a .040 2% thoriated  sharp.....They ALL had wondering Arc issues after the first start up.......Like the can contaminated them?   Didn't dip the tungsten either........I wonder if some cans weld better than others?I used Gas Lens and regular cups all different sizes  and Argon Flows fron 10 CFH to 15.........Same results....kinda making me nuts since I switch to the Lincoln Square Wave and it welds perfect with 1/16 2% thoriated and gas lens......Last edited by B_C; 12-13-2012 at 10:26 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
