Asking some opinions here. What I am building is : http://gfmfg.com/wp-content/uploads/...gid-Frame..pdfI am primarily concerned with 45K-60k water tanks. These tanks are currently welded with a dual shield .045 wire. Plate thickness is 5/8 with v-groove and fillet welds. Typical joint is 3 passes but some are 5 pass welds. We weld to Canadian Weld Bureau ( CWB ) standards.I will limit this to discussing fillet welds on 5/8 plate at this point.I want to change the prequalified ( actually submit a new one ) procedure with a goal of reducing welding time.Ultimate goal is reduce the three pass welds to single pass optimally, but worst case a double pass. I will note that CWB is a little different from AWS and 5/16 inch is max single pass weld width.OK now I have been looking at switching over to .52 diameter wire to get there. In ESab wire I am looking at Dual Shield 70 Ultra Plus, in Lincoln wire I am looking at Outershield 71M, or Ultracore 712A80. Vertical up/Overhead and wire that performs well on 1-2 inch  v-groove welds with long stickout for root passes are big concerns. The wire MUST be CWB certified. Anybody had experience with these in similar weld conditions, or do you have some other wire that is an excellent performer you have personally used? If its gas it must be 75/25, but a straight flux innercore is acceptable.Any experienced thoughts?Note Select Arc 717 has been tried and found unsuitable, performed poorly in vertical up.
Reply:I like Ultracore 71A85. Goes on like butter, seems to meet every imaginable spec. Lincoln has some new wires recently, claimed to have very high deposition in vertical-up. No personal knowledge of them, or the ESAB wires either.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
