The jeep was starting to sag in the rear due to the rear body mounts being cut for stretching the wheel base. Wasn't much but it was slowly getting bigger, time to fix it before its too late Then i had some interference from the tail gate so i just started cutting BraceTail gate.Got one of those Canadian Tire Lincoln welders .

Reply:Question: Were you pulsing the trigger on those welds? Looks that way in the ones in the 1st set on the brace and especially those shown in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th picts in the second set. Not the greatest habit to get into. You should have been able to run a bead on the 1/8" and wash it onto the sheet metal and run longer beads, say 1-2" if you were worried about warpage. I see a ton of cold lap and craters. All of those are stress risers that can lead to cracking..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:This stuff pretty thin, shes from the early 80s. No way to run a bead, my machine was on it's lowest settings and i was starting on the 1/8 plate and pushing it to the thinner metal and i was still burning though. So I was just tacking one side then jumping a couple inches down and tacked again then jump down a couple more inches and tack again untill i got to the end then started again. Didn't know this was bad, what do you mean by cold lap? Heres some picsspent more time filling in holes then it took me to weld in the plate .Last edited by LanceM; 02-06-2012 at 09:43 PM..Got one of those Canadian Tire Lincoln welders .

Reply:I had trouble welding my old tailgate as well. Next tailgate project to do is adding the latches from a truck tailgate to your jeep tailgate so you can get away from the swing latches. I had to do that because I had a later model top in the jeep that would not let you open the upper part without lowering the tailgate. The system worked out ok but I was not very happy with the aesthetic appeal when done.Try adding a backer plate to the locations you are going to weld to. I have used this method when but welding thin panels together. I drill a couple of holes in the outer panels I put the backer plate behind the one outer panel and plug weld it to the outer panel, then I put up the other outer panel and plug weld it to the backer plate. I am then able to but weld my two outer panels together in a reasonable fashion. Works well in non structural work were the backer plate will never be seen.Last edited by Lil Ugly; 05-03-2013 at 10:58 AM.
Reply:What size wire are you running? If your not running 0.23... you should. I did some messing around with my MM175 a while back welding short lengths of banding. I found that using a pull technique allowed the best temperature control in my tests. Might be a helpful read. I originally bought the MM175 to do auto body and the decision was made based on how thin it could weld rather than the norm of how thick it could handle. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=103861 |
