Everywhere i go to get one, there all made in china
Reply:Wilton makes vises in the USA. Hopefully the front jaw won't break off like my import vise did. My latest vise came from the scrap yard, it is a fine piece of cast US steel.
Reply:i bought my wilton at home depot for about $50 if memory serves.its on the end of the work bench in this picture: "Ask not for whom the bone bones, it bones for thee" - Bender
Reply:Wilton makes vises in China, AND in the USA. Expect to pay big bucks for the USA made vises.Of course, these are the industrial quality vises, which are not cheap to begin with, even imported. For instance, the same vise-China-http://www.southern-tool.com/store/w...-503_vise.htmlAnd USA made- Usually at least a hundred bucks more.http://www.southern-tool.com/store/w...300n_vise.html

Reply:I know I am going to really catch it from the peanut gallery. I saw this thing and had to have it at any price. It is a Yost 100lb made in Holland Michigan. I might could have a bargained a little more, not jumped on it so quick. But being the impulsive buyer I am, I went ahead and agreed to the bottle of Bacardi Razzberry as a trade. Attached Images

Reply:All the vises i have in my shop are Wilton Machinist vises, and they are top of the line in my opinion. Expect to pay about $100 per inch of jaw width. The vises are tight, with no flop, and I have even used them to press in bushings. However for a hobby welder i am not sure you would need to spend that kind of money. I have a friend that just put a Kobalt (lowes brand) in his shop, and it seems to be working well, and was not near as expensive. I have seen the old Columbian vises take a beating as well. Basically comes down to how much you want to spend.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:for reference my wilton says "made in USA" on the side for anyone interested in telling the difference. not sure if they all do though. and i didnt know that it was considered such a good vice (ive always liked\abused it), got it off the snap-on guy for cheap $ (...sucker lol)
Reply:Well, Wilton makes several lines of vises. The "machinist vises" are the top of the line. The tolerances are extremely tight on them and very smooth. There is also some other lines, I think maybe there is a tradesman, mechanic, combination pipe/bench, and workshop lines as well to name a few. Each one varies in price some higher some lower. Some great quality, some not so great, but as with most equipment you can expect to pay for top of the line products....I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:i just looked up my vise online and its certainly not the machinists vise lol.still a nice tolerant (to abuse, not refering to its tolerances lol) hunk of metal = D
Reply:Good vice - Is that an oxymoron? I wonder if this one is around yet:http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=580Bless (or curse) that vise thread, it's how I found welding web!

Reply:I bought mine from Sears. It's a 6 inch Craftsman. I couldn't be happier. Also you need the bolt kit for the table mount. Really makes it rock solid. And pretty economical as well. They have a decent web site as well. Attached Images

Reply:I think Ridgid makes forged steel vises that are pretty nice. Don't blindly buy a Wilton thinking you're getting quality, they sell a lot of Chinese junk under their name as well. I personally have a moderately sized Columbian vise. Any vise made in one of the many USA foundries that existed up until 30 years ago is an excellent investment.
Reply:Funny, this thread coming up! We had a neighbor move out that this last spring who just could not take much of his stuff with him and gave us a lot of garage stuff, including this little number. Stamped "Made in U.S.A.", it probably is not a machinist quality vice, but at 3" it fits my tool chest real nice! Price:- a little touch up with a flat sanding disc and some fresh paint.City of L.A. Reply:I'm surprised that the name RECORD has not come up. (maybe cause he asked for american Anyway, made in England, it is a top quality vice. Tight, nice fit and finish, and very sturdy if mounted correctly. I have mine on my workbench over one of the 8x8 wood legs of workbench. 5" cost about 200 canadian I belive.Originally Posted by denrepGood vice - Is that an oxymoron?
