I am putting some tig'd razor blades that will be tacked onto my stainless business card holders, however i'm not sure if it would be better or worse to remove the color from them before i set them out?what do you guys think i should do?
Reply:If you can TIG them so the colors are an even band across the blade and it looks like you controlled heat that well, I'd leave the colors on. The one on the bottom looks real close to what I'm saying. The one laying on top of it not so much. Personally my razor blades would likely have holes blown in them.
Reply:you can tell where i start on them and where it gets up to temp i really don't know any way to avoid that but once it gets up to temp i can do a straw color the whole way out but where its cold its blue.
Reply:Much demand for razor blade welding?Lincoln Electric:Ranger GXT 250SA-200LN-25Pro MiG 256Pro Mig 180Esab CV 251Invertec 160Victor Torches”
Reply:no but its alot easier than parking a busted tractor on the register desk at a local convenience store

Reply:very good point you have there!
Reply:Just remember to weld the razor blades before you put them in there! Show us one that you cleaned up compared to notNothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:that's what i'm not sure about is if i should clean the color off or leave it on but from what i'm gathering it would be clean it off. i know for sanitary work it has to be clean but other stuff its usually not critical
Reply:Clean one and take a pic of it sitting beside one that you haven't cleaned.  For a side by side comparison, and then show us that pic. Then we can tell you what looks better. A welder can tell a good weld without it dolled up. Maybe the guy who picks it up doesn't know a weld from a turkey turd, maybe it looks better with the colors, or maybe it looks good shiny. If you don't like the idea of  showing us a side by side comparison, clean half of the first batch up and see what one people take first?Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:Clean one half and not the other. Maybe that will display your attention to detail since most people don't know the work that goes into welding outside of the actual welding.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:that is a good idea doing half and half i will clean one whole one and take a side by side for you guys and then prob do a half/half thing on the rest like gravel said
Reply:stancemx6I recognize the 'Calling Card' aspect of your welding sample.Give them both: dip-cleanse the 'oxides' on half - and maintain the  'color' - on the other.  This promotes inquisition . . .In your text content: make it apparent that you are fluent with this thickness on up . . . to your 'fab-comfort-zone' . . . Nukes + . . . ?If you are only seeking  'TIG informed' clients - this may be fetching. If you are seeking: general fab-work - this won't say anything to the general 'client at large' - regardless of their need.Welding world is large - define and focus on your 'client base' - and present what you are best in doing . . .Opus
Reply:Stance',Chicks dig color.Besides, the general public doesn't understand what "heat control" is.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:it is mobile welding, whatever needs done. i have experience and certifications (they are not the same) in mig tig and stick. i have never done really exotic metals (titanium, magnesium, etc) but am great with stainless and aluminum. my API and ASME certs are 6G 4" sch. 40 6010 and tig/7018 and my AWS is 3g and 4g unlimited thickness 7018. its pretty much a given that the thinner the material the more difficult if is to weld vs thicker material. it goes with what i mentioned about parking a tractor at the convenience store counter. these will attach perfectly to my business card holders . i realize that alot of people won't know whats what but a good weld is universal i think. i never was good at advertisement but i can give a mean sales pitch. if anything this is a sample of "i can do that" vs just a stack of business cards. this catches the eye  i can't find a single mobile welding service in this area, the local farmers always have to take stuff apart and take it to the 85 yr old man who is trying to retire, who is actually the one that turned me on to the need of a mobile welder in the area since he hasn't done it for years.

Reply:In my marketing class in high school they told us to assume that your customer has absolutely no clue about your product. That doesn't mean treating them like idiots though (obviously). The best thing to do is listen to what they say about welding, just by the terms they use you will be able to fairly accurately identify how much knowledge they have about welding and use your welding terminology accordingly (if someone knows next to nothing dumb it down so they understand what you're talking about, but if they're pretty well informed then adjust your terminology accordingly)Don't assume that people will know that it's harder to weld thin steel then it is to weld thick. I didn't know that before I started researching welding, you probably didn't either. That doesn't mean the welding razors together won't work to attract attention, a lot of people will think its neat and will think of your welding shop every time they see a razor after they see that. Its a pretty sweet idea.My 2 cents. As far as the color goes I agree with what other a have said, try both and see what works better. I suspect leaving them colored will draw more people's attention in general, HOWEVER, I have a feeling thay the people who end up being your customers will probably gravitate towards the ones that have been finished, after all, your customers will more than likely want the welds to look like factory welds because in most people's minds, those are the best. Would you want to pay someone to weld something and leave it colored?I don't own a shop or even weld very well so take this as you will. Please keep us updated on how it goes Last edited by lighttekku; 10-18-2014 at 01:57 AM.Craftsman 90 amp Arc welder
