Ever since the "Tail Bone" cam out I have wanted one.  $150 for a piece of plastic (no matter how sturdy) is just not acceptable. So.  I built my own.  Made in USA also (with global components).  I had a chunk of 2x2x1/8 left over from my bench project.Had several different designs in my head including tripod and a simple T base.  I ended up slinging it low to keep it as stable as possible.  It should make brake jobs, wheel well work and detailing easier than standing up and kicking the milk crate around. It's not finished yet but you get where it's headed.  Got about $50 into it (mostly the tractor seat from TSC) not including the tube or wire.  13" a$$ to floor. Reply:very cool!  My commercially-available mechanics seat isn't really that comfortable. The only thing that needs is a tray to hold a tool or two.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:Looks kinda beefy.Looks like a great job to me.  I have a crapsman seat that I have welded together to make more stable.Used to have another from Jegs.  Nice with a 2 post lift, just high enough to sit and have the tires right in front of you.  Like you said sit on your butt and do the brakes.  Atleast that's how I do.Now I have a drive on 4 post lift low celing, lift high enough to roll under about the right height to sit on my butt and reach up comfortably to work under a car.
Reply:2x2x1/8 ?  That's pretty heavy.  Probably won't tip over!Lots of fit-up practice with all those miter joints!  Nice work!  - MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Seeing as how you've got a square tube there you could consider making it variable height, reciever style with a pin, lower for some jobs, higher for others. How about a little magnetic tray or small parts basket for convenience on it as well? If you're putting this much work into it why not make it as versatile as possible... where does the fishing pole go? Nice job and lowrider design! When a welder tells you to "stick it", what do they really mean?"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell
Reply:Making it so you can raise/lower would be nice, just as long as he doesn't get carried away and make it too tall. That'd increase the chance of it tipping over.
Reply:I have an old Snap On model that I swapped the plywood seat out for a salvaged padded riding lawn mower seat.  MAN!  What a difference in comfort!Neat build project !!!!!!!!I would suggest some sort of tool tray so you can move from wheel to wheel without having to pick up all your tools from the floor.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:Nice job but I am curious why a simple Tee frame wasn't used to avoid a lowrider design from hanging up on highspots, debris, tools, etc.?Don't get me wrong - awesome project!   I'm just curious.". . . with global components . . Reply:That's cool Mick.  I've never seen one like that before and I bet it could take a finger or two off if one wasn't careful.
