All:I need suggestions on where I might look for SCRAP O2/Argon/CO2 cylinders. I want to make a bell out of a couple and gongs for out pistol club out of a couple more.I called a couple of local gas distributers but they all send back to a regional location that the sends to some main plant somewhere they did know.Local scrap yards said they don't even accept them as scrap. Are these scrap damaged cylinders in the same place my dryer puts my socks? Later, Steven
Reply:There is a guy here where I live that makes metal art from gas cylinders. I'll check to see where he gets his.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I don't know if I was handed a line of B.S. or what, but I asked the same thing at my local welding supply center and they said it was ILLEGAL to sell or distribute (give away) scrapped high pressure cylinders in this area (Northeast Ohio). They said that usable cylinders are so expensive that persons were obtaining scrap or hydro-test failed cylinders and having them filled to 3/4 capacity at less than reputable fillers. The guy at the counter actually told me it would be easier to steal a cylinder from behind a shop than to be given or sold a bad one. Since then, I've managed to obtain (legally) only one large out-of-service cylinder, but it had a 2" hole cut into the side to ensure it was unusable. I haven't made a bell from it yet. There are no small projects
Reply:Thanks for asking around.Steven
