I am getting ready to take my aws d1.1 certs and i am just looking for some hints and tips from people that have passed it already. I do pretty good on the 3f as fas as not trapping slag on the sides but it still happens. I run 3 weave passes (4 if my cap is concave). Every now and then i get slag trapped on the sides because i didnt hold it long enough. What are some good ways to get that out of there? The 4f i am tore up about.... any and all tips on that would be appreciatedspeedway series 125 flux core welder

Reply:Are you sure you don't mean 3G and 4G ?
Reply:I got my 3g and 4g FCAW, I know if you pass for a groove weld your certified to weld a fillet weld also in that same position so im not sure about taking just the 3f or 4 f position??? But maybe this little bit of info will help. I didnt really have a problem with globs of spatter sticking on my nozzle in the 4g position. Im not sure if it would make any difference as i dont know what machine your using but I used a Millermatic 350p at the test facility and my settings were 23V and 218 IPM using .045. Not sure the small difference between my IPM I used versus what your running but it might. How much stickout are you using?? I do a lot of switching between hardwire and fluxcore so I catch myself wanting to use a shorter stickout when I run FC, then once the wire burnsback and melts to the tip i remember im welding FC and remember to use more stickout lol. I always thought the general rule of thumb of stickout was 3/4" for FC. The Gun angle could have somthing to do with the big globs of spatter too. Hope this helps a little bitMillerMatic 252Miller Dialarc 250Smith Oxy/acetlyne Cutting OutfitHossfeld BenderTubing Roller

Reply:What helped me with the 4g was doing a 1g weld and paying attention to travel speed (time in seconds), travel distance (how long of a bead per rod) and type of motion you are using (the feel). It is important to get a mental feel of all three of these since your vision will be obscured by the smoke, especially when doing your root pass. If you start doing this you will realize how closely related the two positions are and how most peoples issues with this are mental blocks.
