Reply:Funny you should ask.  I went specifically looking for a spare auto darkening helmet yesterday.  I went into a pawn shop. Purchased a practically new Miller XLix with carrying bag for $70.  I have another miller I purchased about a year ago for $25.  I usually spend time looking, it has been about 1 month search.    I will keep the old miller in my truck and the new at the shop.  I was using my harbor freight helmet in the field until the headgear broke.  I had to use a traditional helmet...I am spoiled after using a/d helmet.  There is a difference in Harbor Freight and Miller.  It amazed me out the first I turned on my Miller helmet and the view got brighter prior to welding.So check pawn shops.
Reply:If your not in a hurry check ebay.  I got a killer deal on a speedglas helmet once. Had to bid on a lot of them first though. There are a few new ones that aren't to badly priced.
Reply:time job to get a deal on ebay, but i'm looking!that 49 dollar deal at hf is pretty tempting.  anyone have one and got a review?
Reply:It works.  Had mine for 4 years.  Head gear broke, though lense still works. I  have noticed some flashing (delayed darkening after arc is struck) over the last few months, perhaps that is a result of a dirty lense or age.  Flashing noticable in dim conditions.  Might have difficulty finding parts ( more than one replacement lenses are a must) locally. Someone posted, saying you can order them through online HF catalog.  It is better than traditional helmet, though definately noticeably inferior to the upper line of a/d battery helmets.  Bottom line --it does work and they honor there warranty. To me the most important thing is getting and having several replacement lenses with any a/d helmet.
Reply:I bougth the HF A/D helmet about a month ago and I love it.  Seems great with my Mig so far, one of these days I will use it with my old Miller Stick machine.  I would say for the money you can't beat it.I weld just to keep my snow plows ready for next Winter!

Reply:So your first post is a poor copy-and-paste from a website with a cheap hood that you don't describe well?Let me guess, the pros all use this hood, but it's a big secret, right?

Reply:Before buying one, you should know some differences. variable shades verses fixed, sensitivity adjustment, delay adjustment, ASNI Z87 approved, how available are replacement cover lenses, warranty, battery backup, and low amp TIG ratings. Your local welding distributor can help you choose.

Reply:come on guys, didn't someone's head just get too big to fit into their "like-new" 200 dollar miller helmet and they now will let it go for the same 50 bucks that harbor freight charges : , )
