Is this tank Customer owned or Leased? Or will I find out once I'm at Airgas to swap it out? It has Oxygen Service Co on the ring but I think Airgas acquired that company a few years ago from Macon ga. It's a 125 cu.ft. I picked up off craigslist on the way home. Also, does the date stamp mean its good till 2020?thanks
Reply:Typically anything under 150 cf is considered customer owned. My local Airgas will swap any 150cf bottle or smaller no questions. If it's a big bottle and a out of business company they'll swap steel for steel. I just took a 20cf Co2 bottle in for swap and it had a hydro test that was good till line 1980 and they swapped no questions.
Reply:Did you pay a lot for that bottle?  Theoretically that is a rental/lease bottle. Some gas suppliers won't touch it. Some will. A blank ring always indicates customer owned, but as I have heard here, may not mean much depending on location.I once had an old bottle with a defunct supplier name on the ring that a customer gave me. It was full and also last filled by air gas, but would not touch it. Got another company to swap it with a blank ring bottle.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Originally Posted by InsanerideWhere did you try to swap Southpaw? I have a stamped ring tank that Im going to take to the place that owns it and see if they will refill or swap. BTW, are you settled in? Find everything ok? I see you like the farmers market. Theres one in Sparks and one in Reno on Mayberry. Theres a CoOp market downtown off of Arlington. They buy and sell food from local farmers.

Reply:Usally if it is a rental bottle, the neck ring on the bottle will have the owners name on it. I see the neck ring says "Oxygen Service Co" on it. I am thinking they own the bottle.www.oxygenservicecompany.com/
Reply:Airgas here locally will swap gas for gas if you have no papers and regardless of whether it's a blank neck ring, Airgas neck ring, or Dicks Hatband neck ring.  For example, they will swap Oxygen for Oxygen, but will not swap Oxygen for Argon.  Let us know how it works out.
Reply:125's can have any name on it and should be able to be swapped anywhere, I do it all the time on my 75/25 125 from three different vendors. I bought it from a vendor in Houston TX and get it refilled at three different locations west of San Antonio.
Reply:I picked up another 80cf c25 off CL yesterday that needed testing and also had a Co. name on the ring. Just left my local Airgas and they swapped them no questions asked. Didn't even look at the dates. I was also able to even swap the 125cf c25 for a pure argon tank. The guy told me they consider anything under 125 customer owned regardless of what's on the ring as many have said here. Thanks for the responses everyone.
Reply:I'm stuck with a 255cf tank with stamped neck ring.  Have to go back to Colorado and swap it out for non stamped ring.    Wonder if I can just grind it smooth and repaint the silver tank?Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:My welding supplier told me the neck rings are glued onto the tank and could be removed.  I have never tried it though.Just saying. ..
Reply:Originally Posted by InsanerideI just scored some little 80cf today. The hydro's are outa date but I have four. One argon (yahoo) one tri mix 90% He, one nitrogen and one empty CO2Argon and Ni are supposed to be half fullTri mix is supposed to be almost full. I will check them out nowSouthpaw, you can borrow the empty CO2 for now, Sierra weld will swap out for whatever orIf your interested in Trimix or straight He and know how to xsfer He from 330 cf to 80 cf then possibly we can work something outI am going to play with Argon rite now but will check back later today so pm me if you want to borrow a tankIt's an open invitation , four tanks are crowding me at this time
Reply:Neck collars can be removed and replaced. Most welding suppliers will do so when they hydro a cylinder that is collared with another companies collar that they have exchanged. As far as I know they are pressed on vs glued. It's been at least 15 years since I saw a bunch of uncollared cylinders so I don't exactly remember the details. If need be we used to have our hydro shop change out collars on cylinders we got for sale for dive gas..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I've only seen pressed on collars, never glued ones. My hydro place charges $20 to install a smooth collar.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Dont tell them you bought it off somebody. My local airgas is now taking bottles from people of they're buying them from others. Owner or not......another good reason why airgas is not my supplier
Reply:Yep. You have to sign something stating that you own the bottle when you have them change the collar.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Gravel ive come to the conclusion you speak the language of bottles lol
Reply:Pretty good video of the process to make a cylinder.

Reply:Grind it smooth and paint it, matching as close as possible.
Reply:Originally Posted by drujininGrind it smooth and paint it, matching as close as possible. It is owned by the company named on the ring.Stamp would appear to mean it is indeed hydrotested until 2020.If airgas acquired this company, they will help you as they see fit.Source: I am a purchaser/CSR for a LWS store.

Reply:All the deceptive tactics mentioned or thought of are just not worth the risk of injury, time or energy to save a a few bucks. If you are any kind of serious welder the price of a bottle or lease shouldn't be an issue.  If you've got to be shady about getting a cylinder filled chances are you've got deeper issues. Develop a relationship with a couple of suppliers if possible, keep your accounts active and be honest. Might cost a few bucks extra but sure beats having to constantly look over your shoulder.

Reply:Glad to hear the OP was able to swap the cylinder. South since you are far from CO I would suggest grinding the collars and do a repaint. Pipeliner don't be a chit head, Don't take it the wrong way, my comment was intended for folks who think they know it all. No hard feelings ok ?

Reply:Its always been this way here in Reno/Sparks. Owner bottles have no name on the ring. No papers needed and it doesnt matter how or were you get your tanks but as long as no name on tank they will swap.  As far as the hydro test place goes; Im sure they have the same policy of owner bottles but its worth a try Southpaw. Dont be discouraged, its just how its done here. Maybee in LA they will swap your tank.

Reply:There is an Auction today listing numerous Acetylene, Oxygen and Propane cylinders, not "Torch Sets". That Auctioneer is intending on selling them "As Is, Where Is". Point is, you buy it knowing its a Lease size or whatever, you better be a smooth talker or have a good relationship with your LWS or whatever it takes for you to get what you want!
Reply:Airgas around here only takes airgas cylinders.. Hocon in bdpt takes just about anything lol. Depeneds where you go.. New shop called Tech Air will only touch their cylinders too.Miller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250
Reply:Ive had my OA setup since the 80's but never used it until the 90's. Its always been the rule to own non labeled tanks here if you want them refilled. I doubt the test facility here will swap tanks with a name on it if the gas suplliers dont.Southpaw, I found a listing in Silver Springs for two empty tanks plus cart for $100. I think its a good deal but I just bought four tanks. One is CO2 and one Helium tank. They look like 122 or 255 cf. The hydro is likely out of date but you can get that for $15 to $25 depending on where you go. Heres the linkhttp://reno.craigslist.org/tls/4727463426.htmlJW_Welding on Spice Island in Sparks test for $15. Most places that I know of will swap CO2 or He for Argon.

Reply:Gizz, good to see you got your tank swapped. Different places have different rules I guess.
