I just bought a new Hobart 190 and got it delivered last Friday.. I haven't used it yet.On the settings 1 thru 7 for the voltage/amps.. How can I tell how many amps I'm using with those settings ?Ex: Say I switch it to #3 settings.. How many amps is that ? etc..etc..etc.. and so on.I've tried searching this site and I've tried searching Google, but haven't had any luck.. I even called Hobart and talked to guy about this, and I can't even explain to you what he said.I'm used to "stick welding'' with a Lincoln 225 AC.. On that welder I know how many amps I'm welding with. Thanks
Reply:1st even though most people talk about amperage with migs, they are constant voltage machines. That means you set the voltage, not amps like you do with a CC stick machine. Actual amperage will vary and is based on several things. One would be wire size, type, gas used and voltage, another would be wire speed and stickout. You can get a rough idea of amperage on pg 12 of the manual where they have the amp/volt curve chart printed if you really care. You can simply increase or decrease amperage for a given wire/gas combo and a voltage wire speed combo, simply by increasing or decreasing your stick out. Moving in tighter makes the weld "hotter", and backing away makes the weld "colder".If what you really want to know is how to set the machine for different thicknesses of material, then what you want is either the chart at the back of the manual, or the same chart that is under the cover of the machine. That will give you a rough starting point based on wire size, voltage tap and wire type used. These are just suggested starting points. You can usually weld hotter than whats suggested, but usually these settings are the minimum at which you can achieve decent penetration into the base layer..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
