I was wondering if a carbide burr would be too aggressive to clean the rust, and crap out of the inside of the pipe for welding. Right now I am using the 1/4" shank flap wheel drums, they work good, just wear out faster. Does anyone have any other suggestions or know if the burr would work?Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold

Reply:Never cared for flapwheels on tubework because as you say they wear out pretty fast and the feeling that they smear and much as polish.  Burrs work good but they create a lot of ugly filings.  Around here we just use what I believe are aluminum oxide stones.  A little longer than the ones in the picture.  Used on boiler jobs all the time.
Reply:If you just trying to clean the rust out you could try one of these on a die grinder.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Rust/Scale, I will try some of those rock stones, and get a burr. CEP, what did you use to get such a even bevel. I have been trying to hand grind, but my saw doesn't cut my pipe square, and my bevels come out uneven.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold

Reply:I like the little cone rock type stones for end grinder. Those burr bit shavings are nasty, they get everywhere. Flappers put out too much dust, clog yer nose all up.
Reply:I use all of the above except the wire brushes. Brushes just smear crap on the surface.

Reply:I always worry about one getting in my eye.
Reply:We use 1" flappers as standard
Reply:weird thought---anyone ever use an engine cylinder/brake cylinder hone to clean the inside of pipes?  The one with the rectangular stones.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brake-Cylind..._Tools&vxp=mtrfigured one of those would work. Obviously not a pipe welder, just thinking out loud.  1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:These work very well if you get decent abrasives (no, not harbor freight ones...)Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:I use a carbide burr and blow all the shavings off. But I also prep 10-20 practice pieces at a time on my lathe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:My Ellis saw cuts the pipe really square to start with. I've also used in the past a vertical belt sander to take the high spots out, to get a flat plain across the pipe.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Originally Posted by smilexelectricI grind my bevels but cant seem to get them flat. They have dips in them so some spots are wide spots, and some are tight spots when I go to tack them up.
