First of all, sorry I have no picture. But I have a small 90 amp flux core just to begin and practicing on being able to run a bead since I'm just starting. But when I do, the finished product is a narrow, but somewhat tall bead, I can keep it going though. What are y'all's thoughts, and what is the correct motion to make ( I'm just pulling a straight line ). Secondly does anyone have the lincoln electric ac225, and does it require gas? Any help appreciated!
Reply:A narrow tall bead i this instance means that it isn't wetting out, as in not enough heat input. A straight drag is a good as good a motion as any unless there is some need for a slight side to side."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Yes, the Lincoln AC-225 is an awesome machine.  No gas is used with that process known as "SMAW."  Google and YouTube it.  You do need skill with that process however.  I think it's the most difficult to master, but also the coolest!Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Small 90 amp FC machines are very limited. They lack the power to do much more than 14 ga steel, yet are too hot for mush less than 16 ga. Add to that duty cycle is very limited and quality drops off very rapidly as soon as you exceed the duty cycle. In general they are just too limited in my book. Also to get those values, you need to be on a dedicated 20 amp 110v outlet with no extension cord. If you run off a 15 amp circuit, a circuit with other things drawing power or use a light gauge long extension cord, you loose output power and the machine becomes even more limited. The AC 225 is a very nice machine. Biggest down side in your case is that it will want a minimum of 30 amps 230v power to run and works best on 50 amps of 230v power. 230v power "scares" a lot of people since it's not a normal outlet. Many homes have 230v electric dryers and that is a readily available source of 230v power. You just need an extension cord long enough to reach where you need to weld. If your electric stove has a plug, that's a 50 amp 230v outlet usually.I'll disagree about stick being the hardest to master, I'd say that goes to tig. It's not all that hard to learn to stick weld on material 3/16" and thicker. Stick welding thin steel does become harder to accomplish..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks for all the help guys! When I get the ac225 I have a generator I'll uses it with, so no worries. Thanks again!

Reply:I have an antique Miller "61" 185 ampere AC only machine that welds beautifully on a 5K gasoline generator and 1/8 6011, or 6013 rod. My Lincoln AC-225 will not run worth a crap on the same generator at the same setting using the same rod. When the Lincoln is plugged into the wall receptacle, it's welds as good as the Miller except for the tap settings as opposed to the infinite settings of the Miller.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
