I have a very small shop. Almost everything is on wheels so it can be moved against the wall when not in use. But my floor stand drill press has me stumped. I am curious if other have found a way to make this top heavy monster mobile yet safe while it is being moved and in use. Thanks,Arvid
Reply:http://www.grizzly.com/products/Heav...ile-Base/G7314We have one similar to this at work, there are two screws to immobilize it when you wanna use it, works well. The machine base is held just above the ground, pretty stable.

Reply:Thanks for the advice. I should have stated "shop = garage = everthing needs to go against the wall when not in use" and "she who must park her car = 'you will not be bolting it down there!!'"My previous research had found the mobil bases but the concern was the top heavy nature of the drill press. Maybe the best course is to take Dave's suggestion of a much larger, heavier base and then mount it on the Grizzly mobil base? Thanks again,Arvid
Reply:The base we have works good, yeah you have to use common sense as to what you clamp to the table on the drill press but it moves around safely.
Reply:Make it just like the one for purchase with as big a footprint and as rigid as you can. The rest is caution and luck. I made one for a drill mill but it's 700lbs and a lower center of gravity.

Reply:I mounted stud casters to the base where you would bolt it to the floor . it works but you must use caution . I have 2x4's under it after I move it to give it more stability. Reply:Mine's only a small 1/2 inch drill press about 2.5 feet tall.  I welded a stand out of 1" square tubing for the square base and cross-bars the drill press is bolted to, with four legs angled out from the corners of the base.  The legs are 1.5" steel angle from bed frames.  The two back legs have casters mounter in short sections of 3/8" pipe; the two front don't.  About 8 inches under the base I welded a square chromed wire rack out of a refrigerator to tie the legs together.  Doesn't move under use, but you can pick up the front and kinda waltz it around on the back casters.TeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
Reply:There are some good safety points mentioned in this thread which should be kept in mind for your project. Here are a few links to my grinder stand idea and a similar discussion in another thread. Reply:what about making a much larger base that you can bolt something else to also? what i mean is to make a base large enough to put a table or some other device on with the drill press. this will increase the size of your base, while still keeping it mobile. if you were to put a 3'x6' table (for example) running north-south, then bolt the drill press to one end of the table, facing away from the table. that way, you can still use the drill, at any height, with any length of stock.if this doesn't make sense, let me know.Later,Andy
Reply:You need to by some means get two wheels on the front of your current base .They need to be out and up just enough so that when you tip the machine to you the weight will be on the wheels then just wheel it about like an appliance dolly.Buy some heavily rated  wheels so you only have to build it once Victor SuperRanger O/A                                         Solar migLincoln Powermig 140Southbend 9in lathe350# kohlswa anvilMiller Maxstar 150 stl etc....
Reply:I had the same problem, I have a very top heavy craftsman drill. I built another small welding table big enough for my drill and HF bandsaw (Got rid of that cheap a$@ saw stand), used 1/4 plate for the top, left an overhang of about 3 inches and put wheels on it and just used c-clamps to hold them down. That way if I need more table space  I just unclamp and sit them off and have a second welding table.grizz_____________________________________________Miller DVITD-39HF 4x6 BandsawHF Bender & Ring RollerCraftsman 12 inch Drill Press4.5 inch Grinders10 inch Metal shearAnd numerous other little goodies!!!
