solar flux B?

many of you have heard me complain about my company's welding procedures, or lack therof.8 and 10" ss304, sch10. this is for what is labeled as "process chilled water" and "indirect tower water" respectively. I do not believe either line to be in direct contact with any food process, they are to provide cooling FOR a process.so, I was instructed not to purge, just fit tight and let her rip, as long as I don't burn through and leave "sugar"well, I put fittings on every joint of pipe we have and now am finding out that the plant wants this all purged and full-pen. . . . . .I try an keep my cool, as I have lately developed a bit of a reputation as a "not so cool" kind of guy. because im always pissed about the bass-ackwardness of many things im asked to do.   "THIS IS THE KIND OF **** IM TALKING ABOUT! THIS IS A GOT-D*** TRAVESTY IF I'VE EVER SEEN ONE AND ITS BECAUSE OF YOU GUYS SITTING IN THAT OFFICE TRYING TO CUT CORNERS DONT F*****G GET IT! WHEN IM TALKING TO YOU ABOUT THINGS LIKE "PROCEDURE" AND "THE PROPER WAY TO DO THINGS" THIS IS THE KIND OF STUFF IM TRYING TO PREVENT. . . . .FOR YOUR BENEFIT.I bit my tongue really hard to keep that from coming out. . . . . .its come out too many times already. gotta play it cool.anyway, supposedly we had a verbal agreement with the customer that this would only be half-welded and they were good with it, up until we got half-way done.sooooooo, in my grand quest to keep my employer as close to the black as possible, im trying to come up with the cheapest fix. I told my boss about solar flux b, and generated some interest, but im not sure what kind of residue it will leave behind. it is not food contact, but it does have to make it through pumps and chillers and valves so large pieces of slag are a no no. I have never used the stuff, and nobody else has ever heard of it so I was wondering your thoughts.anything helps.otherwise, they will buy the cheapest purge equipment possible (like cardboard and duct-tape) and I really don't want that. are there any purge products in particular you guys would recommend? im looking at the inflatables.it sounds like we will be allowed to "back-weld" what we can reach like inside the tees and 45's, but 90's will have to be cut apart and re-worked thanks for your help guys, sorry for the story but I gotta vent to somebody! if I vent uphill, im crying, and if I vent downhill, im reminded about how I have it pretty good with the torch in hand versus cut-off wheels and grinders bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Solar B flux works well as long as you have access to apply it. Then you want to strip it off when it is done, as it is a black residue. Is this possible?Otherwise just purge it. I use anything from duct tape, to masking tape, to alum foil and clamps, and then hoses. Reply:If I were your position, I wouldn't be trying to help them minimise cost's at all, if they had a "verbal" agreement with the client, using good business sense they should have gotten it in writing before cutting the corner, and it seems to me they're not interested in listening.Tell him to get some decent purge equipment, if he gives you an old foam mattress and some masking tape, then let him wear the extra cost's of wasted purge argon, extra set up time, and failure's due to lack of purge, and if he ask's you to do dodgy **** again, do it as described, don't let his stupidity get in the way of your night's sleep, or your time off work, as it's doing now.And if he doesn't want to purge, tell him about THIShttp://www.kobelcowelding.com/pdf/St...X%20series.pdfLast edited by ttoks; 11-11-2014 at 08:34 AM.
