316L filler on 304L?

Hey guys - I have a bunch of 316L that I had picked up when I was doing a project with a 316L plate.Is there any reason I couldn't use 316L for some 304 to mild?  I do have 309L but only in 0.035 - 0.045" while I have 316L in 1/16" which would be more appropriate for this project.ThanksJonMiller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme

Reply:You could use it but if this is any type of load bearing application avoid it.You will get some martensite in the weld which will make it brittle.

Reply:For exhausts, you should really use the 309L. The 309 has extra nickel and chrome to resist corrosion in the zone where the weld mixes with the base metal. That's why it is recommended for welding stainless to mild.The moly makes 316 good for resisting corrosion due to salt water, but will do you no good in a car exhaust. It might be OK for a git-r-done repair but not if you want it to last.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:How about using 308 on 316?  I had accidently welded an exhaust system built out of 316 with 308 stick. Any worries?

Reply:I like 312 myself but its kinda spendy.Lincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.
