Please critique my weld

I getting ready to go back to school and just wanted to get a little feed back. Haven't run a stick welder for many years. This is 1x1x1/8" angle butt joint with 1/8" 6013 rod. I don't remember the amps. I am using a Lincoln tombstone. I was using a whip and pause technique that I saw on one of Jody's videos. Thanks for looking.
Reply:Bead doesn't look too bad. Not knowing machine, material thickness, amps etc, it's hard to make suggestions on where to go exactly.A few things. Whip and pause is a technique for thin slag rods with heavy penetration like 6010/11. Heavy slag rods like 6013, 7014, 7018 should not be run whip and pause. It tends to trap slag as the slag can solidify when you whip out of the puddle and then not get burned out when you deposit metal when you swing back in.2nd thing is that I doubt you got great penetration on that. First 6013 is a low to medium penetration rod. Also your plates are butted together tight. That limits penetration. A small gap or bevel would increase penetration as would choosing a rod designed to dig more. The weld may be more than acceptable for what you want to do, but to get full strength on a but joint, you'd want to see the weld penetrate fully to the back of the piece. That difficult as the material gets thicker without good prep..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thanks DSW. I'll run out at lunch and grab some 6010 rods and will apply a bevel to my next attempt. The machine is a Lincoln AC225. I was running either 90 or 110 amps. I don't recall the exact amperage cause I did this a week ago and it took me this long to build up the nerve to post. . The material is 1/8" thick 1" angle. Thanks for looking.
