I got back from hauling a 2 loads of precast concrete wells for a pump station yesterday that took 2 days to haul 14 miles. And no they weren't all that big, but the City of Philadelphia and the State of New Jersey messed up my permits. So anyway it was a "snake bit" day, and I am thinking maybe I should sell everything and get a job as a greeter in Walmart. So I want to get some of my Oxygen tanks exchanged and I have some that are out of hydro. Well my new gas supplier told me he would exchange them for his tanks as long as they are green and look half decent. He takes care of the hydro and all and there is no tank rental that way.So I am cleaning up the bottles with a wire wheel on my B&D 4.5 inch grinder and I did the stupidest rookie mistake. I was still wearing an orange reflective safety vest and it was loose. Well guess what happened. Boy did it hurt when those wires tore my thumb open, and went across my stomach. Now before I can even get the switch off, the grinder smokes while tangled up in my safety vest, in my armpit.I think the new grinder is going to have a paddle switch or something so the damn thing shuts off when it gets ripped out of my hand.Oh yeah, It was a pretty good "refresher course" in the not wearing loose clothing around rotating machinery.
Reply:Thankful At least you still have a thumb. Lesson learned.

Reply:I'm not exactly fond of thumb switches either. I've had a similar experience, but I got away. The grinder ran until it wrapped it's cord up and unplugged itself.Glad you didn't get hurt any worse!Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:I've been grinder bit before myself and it is no fun. Glad your injuries were minor. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I personally only buy dangerous tools with momentary switches and never lock them on. Glad to hear it didn't do worse, maybe tomorrow will be a better day.
Reply:The only real injury I ever had while welding came from a grinder.  I won't run them without guards and I am very careful with them.  When they get you it's fast and painful.
Reply:That hurts alot! Do'nt ask me how I know!
Reply:Sorry to hear it drew blood.  Just sucks.  I was using a 7" grinder on something.  I had a loose sweatshirt on.  The wheel grabbed my shirt and wadded it up is a nano second.   It felt like some one had just punched me in the stomach HARD.  I learned not to wear loose clothing that day too.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Just saw a post on another site of a guy pulled into a lathe from loose clothing. Won't put the site address as it was just too gory, the merciful thing was he died instantly. A shocking reminder of just how quickly things can go terribly wrong.I wear a "maintenance blue" uniform, dorkey looking perscription safety glasses with side shields, and heavy steel toed boots at work. I may not be making a fashion statement or have the most comfortable wardrobe, but I still have all my body parts in working order.Loose clothing and any rotating or moving power equipment just don't mix.Miller MaxStar 150 STHTIG Advice From Co-Worker - "Just don't burn a hole so big I can't fill it."
