Reply:I can't answer your question, but, I need one of those in my shop just to drink beer and look at......Old machinery is a thing of beauty.Yeah, yeah, I know you are a weldor too. But, are you a good one?
Reply:Seems like if it is a acme feed screw it should use a "centralizing acme thread"I think at the root a 3/8" is somewhere about .292" But if I remember right a 3/8 should be a 12 per inch. The centralizing acme is a variation that is used for feed screws because it prevents "slop"Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:Is that the tail stock you have apart? Keep in mind if you are going to get any service from that machine the tolerances need to be EXTREMELY close!  To get it right I would find a stick of acme threaded rod, and make the part in the lathe, and turn it and thread it for the deminsions of the threaded rod.  That may not be the answer you are looking for, but that is how I would do it if it was me.  I don't know if I have any 3/8" or not in the shop, but I will look and see.  If i do, i'll measure it and let you know what it is.  However I would still rather turn and thread it for the pice I am using incase there was a variation.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:according to Machinery's Handbook 23 Revised Edition, ACME 3/8x10 thread requires a:0.3750" major diameter0.3250 Pitch diameter0.275" Minor diameter in the 2G, 3G, 4G, & 5G classes. this means you need a 0.2750" drilled thru hole for your tap to work right. hope that helps.Later,Andy
Reply:I have the hand crank and micrometer and measured it and counted threads per inch 3/8 by 10 was the count. The brass piece in three parts in the picture is the piece the hand crank not shown in the picture had a perfect amce thread rod on it .The boss is the part that broke my plan is to drill a hole centered in a piece of .500 by 3/4 round stock and make a boss have that boss taped with acme thread to match my hand wheel and have a key way cut center and weld a piece of flat stock in the key way. Fit it in and then drill the rivet holes using the holes that are there for pilot does that sound like it will work
