I am currently a sophomore in high school. Next year I have the option of participating in the Tech ed program. My school offers both a construction trades program and a auto mechanics program. Which one of these programs should i take if i wanted to go to welding school in the future?
Reply:I would say auto because even if you don't get into welding the demand for skilled advanced diagnostic auto tech is outpacing supply. That's my profession...Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:Ask the school. There is nothing more anyone could say without knowing the course outlines, and what they cover.
Reply:They don't offer a welding course? What kind of trade school doesn't have welding?Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Yea building trades ,what do they teach ,How to staple a roof or how to glue pipes and maybe dry wall ,or how to screw in a light bulb for electric shop. If it doesn't prepare you for fast food service the schools don't want to bother. just send them off to college so maybe in 4 to . 6 years they will have learned what they should have in 8 or 9 grade. Sorry for the rant , but the sad state of education just eats me up.Good thing I am too old to learn any thing ,and if I did I would forget it by next week. Oh I am sorry kid if I ran off at the mouth . I don't know where you live so this may not work , but if you want to learn to weld make a deal with your parents , If you get good grades they will will buy you a stick welder ( one of the three L,M,H) and you can start learning . because unless your school has a real welding program you will not get very much hands on welding .gxbxcLast edited by gxbxc; 11-18-2014 at 11:08 PM.

Reply:I just wondered if it would make more sense to choose one program over the other and then go to a welding school like Hobart.Miller Dialarc 250 AC/DCWeldcraft A-150VSmith O/P

Reply:I, as well, went to a technical highschool. Graduated just under a year ago (2014.) Young gun - i know. Our school for whatever reason didn't offer Welding. Closest we had was manufacturing and most of those kids stood around all day twiddlin' their thumbs standing around the microwave popping popcorn all day. I took Plumbing & Heating. I liked the teacher and took the shop. Regretted it for the first year (really wanted to take electrical but the plumbing teacher won me over). Looking back on it now i'm happy i took it. Just having the knowledge to pipe up a house, run a septic line, install all the plumbing in a house, install water heaters, know about proper pitch, codes, piping boilers, how to fix things, etc seems to be worth its weight in gold. My senior year our plumbing teacher got deployed to afghanistan and we had nothing but subs. We had a welding corner in the shop (we had two old miller stick welders and a mm252 mig welder), and me being me (Some kid who loves jeeps) wanted to learn to weld. I watched a BUNCH of youtube videos and then proceeded to spend most of my senior year welding things together and practicing. No, i'm not saying i'm some god welder, but for my welding purposes i'm good enough. If i were you i'd take a trade. Any trade really. It'll help you out in the long run and be something you can fall back on. You, as well as me, are both young. You've got plenty of years ahead of you to hone your skills and learn to weld. Oh, and seriously pay attention in school. Math makes everything easier. If you're good with numbers everything will be easier. God, i feel old writing this.
Reply:If you want to be a welder you will have to know how to read a tape measure, use a square, use triganometry, read a blueprint, work in a construction or manufacturing environment and take direction as a team from a team leader. Building trades will prepare you for welding better than auto mechanics. Just my opinion. Good luck in whatever you do young buck.
