Hey y'all, I've been welding for a few years, mostly as a hobby but as aux welder at work. I know that after my Navy career I'm going to either attend Tulsa or Hobart and taking all of the classes I can. I figure this will at least get me on the right path. I was wondering if there are any kind of practices I could be doing now to improve both mig and tig skills. I have access to a MM200, and 2 MM250's along with a Miller 330 A/BP, Syncrowave 250 and a 250 DX all 3 water cooled. Along with that i have access to most common metals such as copper, mild steel, stainless and maybe some high strength stainless, copper, aluminum and titanium. Ive been doing mostly just things such as butt welds or lap welds with tig and mig I hate to say ive been neglecting practice with due to constantly welding on projects in school. Also we only have access to red band tungsten at work but i would be willing to order some other kind if it would.Millermatic 200United States Navy Aviation Machinist, HOOYAH
Reply:Practice is good as long as you aren't reinforcing bad habits.Biggest suggestion I'd have is to practice consistency and learn to read the puddle. If you are doing something wrong, but are doing it wrong consistently, it's easier for me to help students make corrections. If in the same bead they are changing 3 or 4 different things, it's very tough to make useful suggestions until they can control their movements. If you can't learn to read the puddle, you will be very limited in how far you can go as a welder.A better idea what your skill set is would help as far as making suggestions. Run some beads and post them up along with all the pertinent info like machine used, amps, wire size, gas and flow rate material and thickness etc. The more we know, the better the replies will be..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
