Well, I've decided I want to buy a tig  and have been doing some research on different machines. I know there are alot of opinions and brand-loyalty that goes into welders, much like vehicles, so I try to weigh everything said as best as I can. The best deal I've found advertised, was from the company I had bought my Passport from (which, by the way, is a great machine). I know I need the machine, and the contractors kit for it (going with footpedal). Any other ideas for what I should pick up with which ever tig I do decide to go with? My local welding shop has great prices on tanks / gasses, but their machines tend to go for MSRP.So any input on machines, and other items (consumables, etc) to go with it would be greatly appreciated. I already have a decent helmet, the Optrel satellite. Thanks guys :P
Reply:I have a 200dx, and I love it.  I am a hobby welder, so I don't even scratch the surface of the machine's abilities, but I wouldn't give it up.I would have settled for a non-a/c output machine, but wanted the ability to do aluminum. The other selling feature for me was the inverter and being multi voltage compatible.  110-460, single to three phase. And an odd way to sell a machine, was American Chopper.  I figured if it was good enough to make a 100k$ bike, it's darn good enough for me.
Reply:Good Day:I started out tigging with a Maxstar 150STL... great machine My lil bro is running around Western NY with it making all kinds of bucks. I then moved to a Thermal Arc Master 185... again this machine is a smooth running unit, the reason for the up grade was the AC output. I did a few aluminum intercooler pieces and damn near paid for it on just a few jobs. I recently came about owning a Dynasty 200DX. The only reason I picked up the Dynasty is for the ability to run multi-voltage.... I had to let a few jobs go due to the customer not having 220 at the site (and my Maxstar somewhere in NY). I sold the TA for what I bought it for and the Dynasty for $200 more than that smokin deal  had that not transpired that way I would still have the TA and running happy.  Oh I am basicly a hobbiest that likes to go out and take side jobs for the fun of a challenge... in no way a "heavy professional" user. What is your end use?
Reply:Hobby use. I plan on doing aluminum as well, which is why I was looking at an AC machine. Of those that have the 200dx, what consumables would you buy at purchase? Cups, caps, tungsten, etc..? How often do they wear out under normal use / learning use?
Reply:Good day:Of the Tig consumables most of what you will eat is tungsten. I have fried a few gas lenses due to material not being clean along with their cups. I mostly use 3/32 tungs. pick your flavor other than pure.... they all work well for what us hobbiests do. For collets and bodys, I have been having good luck with the gas lenses and collets from welding depot, cheap and really do help. Back caps if your careful the long or medium one will last a long long time, a stubbie is kinda nice sometimes though. I have a bunch of misc. cups from them also but the next time I need any I will get the real Weldcraft ones from Arc Zone... I buy my tung local but the prices online for torch parts can't be beat around here and usually there is a shipping cutoff for free shipping.
Reply:the dynastys are AWESOME machines.  Small, powerful, adaptable input for power, and optioned well (frequence, pulser etc...)I had a chance to use the dynasty 700 before miller released them to the public.  It was my first time using an inverter, i was thoroughly impressed.  I myself have been looking for a decent used 200dx for my garage, the problem is, people buy them and dont sell them because they like them so much.
Reply:Drivethrough: If you have good relations with your LWS and they inturn get along good with Miller you may be able to land a deal like I did. A 3 year old machine from one of the trade schools with 42 power on hours and like 3300 arc on events. Mine came with a year full warranty and I saved bocu bucks. As you may (may not) know the schools buy machines then trade them in a few years later to stay on top of the tech. Just one more option for the lil guy to get cool toys... may not be perfectly new and shiney but it saves bucks.
Reply:i have seen some amazing deals on some tig welders in the past, the problem is someone always snags them before i get a chance too.No worries, ill find one eventually.
