Thought I'd share the simple pipe gate I just completed and installed today. Total length is 42 feet. The posts I fabbed from 8 inch H-pile which I stuck 4 feet deep in 2x4x4 concrete footings. They ain't going to move unless hit by a dump truck...which is a distinct possibility.Hinges are fabbed from 1/2" stock and the pivots are 7/8 rod in homemade bushings equipped with welded grease fittings. They operate smooth as a baby's butt. The finials I constructed by welding pyramids I made from 1/8" plate onto simple angle frames and topped by 8" hollow balls I purchased online. To fit the balls,  I used a 2 1/2" hole saw and drilled down through the top of the pyramids creating nice cozy seats. The balls were 1/8" thick and welded up sweet. Fun little project.... Reply:Hinges are very straightfoward and attached to main posts with 2 bridge bolts each. I slotted the top hinge axle holes slightly to allow the gates some up and down adjustment. Reply:That looks strong  and balanced. I like the straight line across the top.
Reply:Thats a slick looking gate set up.   I saw one near here with a single post and it leaned in about 8 inches.  Nothing like the quality of the gate you have.  I may copy the bearings.richey
Reply:That looks amazing. Like Raider12 said......The straight top line is amazing
Reply:Thanks all, for the comments. Having a very small shop, I'm forced to build gates across four horses...with one ending up outside which I have to shim up to keep everything straight...which is really best done by eye.Looks good...is good. The most important lesson learned after building lots of these is to not overheat any one joint when welding up. After all is lightly tacked up, I weld all joints from 12 to 3 o'clock...flip unit over and do the same...but opposite and so on till all welded. If you get one joint too hot all at once you will hate yourself and warp the top chord...usually upward and/or sideways...essentially wrecking the job.  Very difficult to bring it back and will never be 100%. Happily, my gates usually come out near perfect...if I may say so myself.      There are few things in life uglier than sagging gates.
