Hello welding web, Im attaching a picture of my schools certifications acquired upon completing the program. Are these any good in the work field? I understand theyre worth something but exactly what kind of jobs,in what fields could I be qualified for with them? Attached Images
Reply:You need a little more information that what that says to tell you what the certs actually are. My guess is the stick certs are possibly AWS D1.1. That's a very common structural stick certification. The 5G and 6G would be  some sort of pipe cert.Whoever is running the program can tell you what the actual certs are. There are literally thousands and thousands of different certifications. Some are AWS, others might be say API. A structural stick or FC cert would be useful in getting a job doing general steel fabrication or structural steel work. It might also get you a job doing heavy equipment repairs, though that's a different cert typically. It would show you are competent  running stick, at least in what ever position you get your cert in.Stick and tig certs could get you a job doing pipe work.Mig certs might land you a job doing production welding or a job in a fab shop.Certs in alum or stainless tig could land you jobs in that field..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Thanks , that was very informative, once I get more information on exactly what certs they are ill post it but I'm pretty sure they're AWS certs. I have a more detailed course description if you don't mind looking at, that may be able to help give you a better idea of the types of certs obtainable. Also do you think those certs you mentioned are worth obtaining? In the welder qualification/certification course it says:Students learn welder performance qualifications and weld testing requirements for various codes and standards using SMAW GMAW FCAW & GTAW processes. Students learn basic visual weld inspection per ASNT-SNT-TC-1A. ASME AWS API AAR DOT and employer qualification requirements are covered with extensive open lab time for students to complete qualification tests.

Reply:From what I gather, "private" certs are more to demonstrate to a hiring company that you have a good likelihood of passing their certs. That said, if you can pass them, it gives you more confidence and experience."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:If you have to pay alot of extra money to get these "Certs" i would not go buying all of them.  Just get one or two to show a potential employer that you have what it takes to pass a weld test.  Any company who requires you to be qualified per their procedures, whatever standard they might be to, will make you test to their procedures. Don't waist your money on a bunch of pieces of paper that don't really mean anything anyway.Good luck.
Reply:I really appreciate the input guys, it seems like a really good school with a really good curriculum. I'm very excited about entering the school this upcoming semester and being that much closer to having a solid skill set under my belt. Welding seems pretty cool from what I've observed and I'm no stranger to hard work (I have a lot of prior warehouse experience from assembly line to order picker so I'm used to the long work hours and general labor). Are there any certs I should look into obtaining? I want to be able to be qualified for the top paying fields and I'm able to travel.
Reply:From what I know all these certs are covered with my tuition, all I have to do is pass the weld test to obtain them @jef1Thanks for the good luck wishes
Reply:A 6G cert on pipe tells potential employers that you can basically sick weld in all positions.  They are going to give you weld tests anyway before they hire you.  If you have a cert, you are going too get offered to go test with them over the guy who doesn't have a cert.  Likewise get some kind of all position cert in the thickness and material that you decide you want to work with.  But I don't see that having lots of certs straight out of school is really going to help you much.   Exactly what CEP said.  I'd all the cert costs are included in the program then work your tail off and get as many as you can.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:get as many as you can for as cheap as you can.    In most cases a cert is like a license  to have the chance to show the inspector you can weld.  The inspector will stop you the first 5 minutes if you cant weld.     I get calls all the time, people wanting jobs, the biggest tunoff to my ears is when someone spits out they are a certified welder in there first breath of air.    It's amazing how many people got the paper work, that shouldn't.      I say get what you can, cuz they are expensive to test, but they don't have much value if you cant do it for reals, your not going to fool anyone w/ them.  best of luck

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWUnderstand up front this is still an employers market in a poor economy, despite what the media and the school may want you to believe. In many cases places won't even look at a new student. They'll want at least 5 years of experience minimum in what they want you to do, and offer starting wages for that experience. There are simply too many people out there desperate for work to pay the bills and willing to take a pay cut if it gets them employed again as their unemployment has run out.Work is also area based. Someone with 20 years of experience may not find a job at any salary, where one or two states over they may need bodies no matter what the skill level. Finding the opportunities isn't always easy.I'm not trying to scare you off. Just making sure you don't buy all the BS schools can often shovel. To get top paying jobs right out of school, you'd better have an in with someone. Chances of you walking out of school and making big bucks, just isn't going to happen much, if at all. You'll have to put in your time and move up the ladder. If I had to pick one process that tends to bring the most money at the entry level, it would be tig. Tig requires the most skill and control, and good tig welders are often in demand. Pipe welding, both in tig and stick would be #2, but many times you have to have some sort of "in" to easily break into the pipe field.
