Hey guys and girls,I ran across a Hypertherm Powermax 800 today on the big auction site for $800.  I have been looking for one of the smaller cutters for a while now and couldn't make up my mind on which way to go.  I couldn't resist the deal and bought the 800.  It is supposedly in very good condition and looked really clean in the pics.  Do the collective "you" think that I made out as much as I do, or is there something that I may be overlooking?  Thanks in advance for any replies.Rene
Reply:If I remember correctly, this was the first in the Powermax lineup, and was a 50 amp unit, max cut is probably 5/8"-3/4" The only downside I remember to this unit was that the contactor was an open, exposed unit, and in time it would go out due to all the dust and particles that would get inside the unit. Shortly after this unit came out, Hypertherm came up with an enclosed replacement contactor, once a guy had that installed these units were pretty much trouble free. This unit was then upgraded to the 55 amp Powermax 900, and then the current model, the 60 amp Powermax 1000. Good Luck with the new toy!
Reply:If it cuts anywhere like my Powermax 1000, it's no toy.  And at less than half the price of what I paid, it's a bargain.
Reply:Rene,Sounds like a good deal. If and when you need to upgrade the torch....Hypertherm has the RT60 torch that is designed to upgrade the older style torches....better consumable life, faster cut speeds. Reply:First off, I would like to thank you all for the replies.  The cutter got in yesterday and it was as advertised.  I is externally clean (a little dusty) and even has the original display tag still hanging from the carry handle.  It has a rated cut of 1/2" with a 3/4" max recommended and 1" max server.  I played with it for a bit but it only had a set of gouging consumables in it so off to the LWS for some parts.  They didn't have them in stock but will have them on Thursday.  I guess it's time to order some metal and get started on the boat lift project.  Thanks again for all of your time, it has made learning to weld a very pleasant experience for me.Rene
