is there anyway of removing a broken carbide tap when it snaps off in the hole being tapped? is it possible?.
Reply:Yeah, you can get tap removal kits from most industrial supplies.  They run about $80
Reply:This is something I have heard about but haven't tried.  Heat the broken tap red hot, then cut off the fuel gas and blast out the tap with pure oxygen.
Reply:Are you positive the tap is carbide??Most are Hi-Speed steel..Let me know what it is and then I'll tell ya..Carbide taps...Not in our shop.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Is it broken off below the surfaceof the part? Can you TIG weld? If you can get down into the hole you can slowly build up the tap and eventually get enough material on it to grab it with a pair of vice grips.Im not sure if it would work on a carbide tap, but I have used carbide end mills to machine out HSS taps.If your still stuck you can find a machine shop with an EDM machine and they can burn it out for ya.Yup
Reply:Peoples wants to know:What size tap, in what material?Blind hole or through hole?New threads or old threads?
Reply:I've even used needle nosed pliers to get 'em out - broken taps that is!
Reply:If it's a through hole and sticking out just a little I have taken a hammer and shattered the remaining tap then dug it out of the hole.  I have also used the torch method.  It all depends on the situation.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:IF it is carbide, the options are limited. Those that I have used include EDM ('bolt burner' or 'stud burner' are common flavors that many automotive/heavy equipment shops have), diamond burr on a die grinder, heat shock (shatter the carbide with a small torch flame), acid removal,  and impact.EDM is probably the best.
Reply:The only time I've had to do it, it was a HSS tap in a short through hole.  A punch and a hammer and I just blasted it to bits out the other end.  Hope yours winds up being that easy...
Reply:Punching it out (use eye protection AND face shield), but sometimes boogers the threads. Can't really drill it due to drill flex, but you can bore it in an mill.We have laser removal services in my area.Like was said, it really depends on the hole, blind or through, new or old, long or short, material of tap and PART.  Blasting it out of cast iron will more than likely damage the threads and you'll end up going with a repair insert.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:You can't weld carbide or I can't. It will stick but cracks right off when any pressure is applied. You can braze it but if you had room enough do that other methods would work easier.

Ok sorry they are Hi- speed steel,in the 4mm-12mm range (sorry i dont no imperial) its the smallest diametre ones that tend to break in blind holes .  im curious to no is there any other milling cutters or drills that are made out of a material that is harder than carbide or is carbide the hardest material that you can get ?

Reply:Originally Posted by BurnitIt worked for me when I used stainless rod, but I also wasnt anywhere near a milling machine, building it up little by little and then grabbing that nub you made is a real pain in the butt
Reply:last time i took a carbide endmill to a broken HSS tap i poured some low temp casting metal  in the hole and let it set around the tap, endmilled down the center of the tap while blasting high pressure air. i was suprised that i did not ruin the milling cutter.i cant remember the name of the metal but you can get it from MSC, it melts at real low temperature , like 150 degrees or something.i saw a guy heat cherry red, chill with liquid nitrogen and shatter with a handheld electric engraver a 1/4 20 tap.insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:very helpfull and i thankyou all for your replys
Reply:Put a couple of drops of ferric chloride on it, it will eat away. Works better if the metal is stainless as it will eat the tap a lot faster than the stainless.  If both are carbon just keep playing with it until it spins out.Carbide cutter will cut the HSS Tap out right?I have something like a 1/8 tap that is broken and there is nothing to grab it with , because it broke off right at the top, and you can't get it from the other side because its just a face thread.
