Has anyone made a snow drag? I have been looking at the drags for gravel roads, and a thought came to me about a snow drag that would push the snow off to one side, just for small paths for pedestrians not so much as to plow the roadMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150 3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine welding&fabrication
Reply:The problem with pulling something to clear snow is you drive over it first compacting two tires tracks of snow which may not move. Some people get mad when you drive in their driveway on fresh wet snow because it is very hard to get it up after that.
Reply:Yeah I know my boss had an idea for it at work no worries about driveways or any of that it's only for our pads and our yard. Work out in the middle of no where so thanksMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150 3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine welding&fabrication
Reply:a major component of how a snow plow works is that the plow is mounted so that the front of the truck is loaded by the weight of the plow and also the weight of the snow is transferred through the plow and to the front of the truck. This does a couple of things: The weight forces traction to the front tires ( which you need) and it allows the plow to undercut the snow and prevents it from being pushed up and over the snow. Dragging a device would necessitate a very acute cutting angle for the lead edge of the plow in order to prevent it from riding up and over the snow. This acute angle would also cause it to catch on nearly every little thing, such as irregularities in the sidewalk probably stopping the tow vehicle dead each time it caught. . In gravel it might even dig into the gravel sweeping it away and snag on the frozen ground.Hey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!
Reply:Well other than when you drop the plow you've only got the additional 100 pounds of plowing gear not the 600 pounds of plow on the drive wheels, unless you cheat it a little. As to a drag, hmm, had moderate success with 3 tire rims welded in a triangle for doing trail maintenance, it fully depends on amount and type of snow. Uhh, I hear it snows in AK... hmm, If you could make a V plow drag but then if its just dragged and hits something, it'll scoot off to the side. If you're using an atv or tractor, V plow for the front and a frame made of 12ga tubing should be fine. Put a pivot back by the footpegs. You gain extra traction by moving the snow from under the wheels.
Reply:plow for snow, drag for gravel. here's why. with a plow you're removing the slippery surface before the tires get to it. with a drag on gravel you're leaving the road compacted before you drag it loosening up the road surface making traction worse. if you were to drag snow, you'd just bog down in the slick snow once the drag was full. To do side walks you're going to need something small to pull it anyway so you might as well just make a plow for said small thing. You'll be better off and have more success. There are no problems. Reply:Thanks Thors, we went from here to Florida towing a 30' RV, what a HOOT! 14,000 miles. Met a TON of great people and ate a TON of great food. Saw some wonderful places but nothing better than here in Chelan County. We do get a lot of snow and I do get tired of running the snow thrower and the plow. Here's southern cooking; "You want that stick of butter deep fried"?
Reply:The answer is yes you can. try one of theseOr build your own.If you have equipment with a front loader this is amazing.Lincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.
Reply:so you can... If you've got a very large tractor with super float tires and all wheel drive. Not very practicle for a side walk. It's stick with a plow. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Most all of the tractor builders such as Kubota, Deere & New Holland make drags and they work great for snow clearing. The box drag leaves a super clean surface in tight spots that you can not plow into. Look at some of their designs

Reply:Yeah I envisioned a small plow like that was angled to draw the snow towards the middle of the truck there are 'no sidewalks it's just an idea so that I don't have to shovel little paths from building to building. The building can be as far as 150 yards or more apart and if i could rig something up that I could just drive around towing then do minor cleanup with a shovel. On one of the facilities we get 70mph winds in the winter and it creates VERY hard packed snow drift that I have to shovel through. Not a good time lol but I think I have an idea as to how to design it thanks for the inputMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150 3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine welding&fabrication |
