Hello. I use a HF flux core welder to tack weld with.                                                              I thought I had done a decent job with covering a part that has a thread on it  but i got a few dots of splatter so that i can screw my part together so well.   Is there a best way to clean these threads?
Reply:I'd try using a bench girder with a wire wheel/some kind of wire brush on it first. I now put anti-seize on all threaded parts prior to welding now thanks to the guys on here .-Pat
Reply:I'd use a tap to clean out the threads.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:If it's male thread and you don't have a die for it, a triangle file will usually clean it up acceptably.
Reply:One unorthodox solution:Dip the threads you want 'clean' in oil before welding and generally they stay clean. I know its messy, and a lot of heat input would cause smoke & maybe fire, but it works. Use your better judgement here. -corne-Last edited by cornemuse; 12-20-2012 at 10:36 AM.Reason: spelling!!
Reply:I use tap & die to clean up after also but I try to use tape before.  I have used masking or duct tape usually whatever is close.  Aluminum foil or foil tape for ductwork too.Miller XMT 304 cc/cvMiller 12RC w/ 15ft Tweco #4 GunMiller 30A SpoolgunCustom Thermal Arc TA 10/270 Generator "Thermal Star"Smith oxy/acet-propane with weld, cut & rosebud tipsAnd of course grinders, chop saws, hand tools
Reply:Everybody should have a couple of thread files on hand."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Flux core.  Feel the pain too,When putting casters on, threaded post style, I weld in thread couplers for mounting.  To keep the threads clean I thread in a sacrificial screw to plug the hole. Can you do a similar thing and thread some nuts on as covers for external threads?

Reply:Spray with anti spatter and use a thread file
Reply:Im working constantly with/near precision machined threads and I can say that the only thing that does the job properly is covering them up first. I have access to and generally use a thin (.020") brass sheet wrapped arounding threading and held in place with a hoseclamp. alternately a piece of pipe cut and used as a sleeve works if the fit is snug. antisplatter and thread files work acceptably if the tolerances are relaxed on the end result. they arent an option for me unfortunately.
