Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I posted a question over in the "Introduce yourself" page and got some help but was told that if I posted here I may have a little more luck. I recently bought a Hobart Cyber Tig 300 welder for $200 from a from a man I was doing some work for. The welder is complete minus an Argon tank and regulator. I know that the machine is quite old (Around 1980 I was told) but it was said to work great and since it was in my price range I got it. I recently decided to build a little work shop in the back yard to house my mill, lathe, grinders etc. so I decided to have an additional 100 amp circuit run to power the welder as well. I have a few questions for someone who may have used one of these welders in the past, or may currently own one now. Firstly, how does this machine do on aluminum? I know it will weld aluminum but many machines weld more smoothly then others. Secondly, the welder came with an Esab hw20 water cooled torch. It was disconnected when the old owner delivered it to my house on his trailer so that it did not get broken. How dos this attach? I have the torch with 3 lines coming from it, 2 with left hand thread water fittings on the end and 1 with  a smaller right hand fitting that I assume is the argon coming from the welder. Where is the torch powered? On the front of the welder there is a large lug with a bolt in it, the water fitting I have has a large lug on it as well. So I can only assume that the water fitting bolts there. Is the torch somehow powered through the water fitting? Lastly, to anyone who has used a Cyber Tig, is there anything I should look out for when using this welder. I know that all machines have there little quarks or short comings so I would like to know what I should keep an eye on when using this welder. I plan to have it for many years to come and would like to be able to take great care of it. Thanks for every ones time.
Reply:The old Hobart TIG's are good machines. Take care of it and it will take care of you. They weld aluminum good, just like any other TIG. Attachments - - coolant in and out- gas- your coolant line is also your power line. - work clamp ( some  new people may call this the ground clamp) The water/power and work clamp attach to those lugs on the machine. If someone doesn't post a picture, I will post one today and show you.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Just don't get scared of all the knobs, it is a good machine that has lasted a long time and will last a lot longer.  John    (Micro is correct, no use adding to his post.)   JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:You have two size fittings - the smaller is 'B' size and the larger 'C' in the industry nomenclature. The C fitting, left hand, goes into the power cable adapter, Linde number 45V11, that should be bolted to electrode stud. Waste water comes out the other side, a B fitting. The right hand fitting is the argon supply line and goes to the gas solenoid output. The left hand B fitting goes to output of water solenoid or to output of pump if you use one.     The Cybertig was top of the line in its day and built like a battleship. Should give you many years of good service.    weldersales
Reply:Thanks for the replies. I have been away from home with work and did not get back into town until last night. I would like to hook the welder up tomorrow and want to make sure I understand correctly. I drew up a quick diagram of the way I think I understand to be correct.  Am I translating your directions correctly? Thanks again for everyones help. I am looking forward to using the CyberTig for the first time tomorrow, building my own torch cooler. I hope the CyberTig is everything I have heard it to be.
