Reply:I know this is not the popular choice, but I would say to put it in your 401K or IRA and invest in gold and oil stocks.  It will be worth a lot more to you in the future when you want to retire.  Now is a great time to be buying stocks in your retirement account because of the low values in the market.  Just my 2 cents.
Reply:buying stock is slower than an equipment investment if you have a trade to ply with... you can get that lucky project and get upgrade or money in bank... your choice. Pick second hand for now... buy good new one for a long term sign contract... get a few solid men in your team and a few contracted sidekick when the load get heavy...Too many increase in worker will kill you once the project had subsided... my thought in investment...Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...

Reply:Well I was a poor bloke never did finished my university... now studying design and gettin a weld cert. Life is a bit_ch but its like gamble... with no coin to spare...There is this proverb:powerful person take clever person see opportunitystupid person wait for chance.I mean no disrepect... with US$14,000 and that equipment list, he will be very good heading a small nice fab shop.If you cant stand the sight of money then spend it on good equipment, if you are a tight money bare bone person hold it for material to do a bigger job, cash flow is important. If looooong term sitting on a rocking chair waitting for a pensiun nest egg then that is a good bet... 30 years is a long wait and things does change unexpect... many people tend to cash in when they have urgent problem.Business investment is another side of the same coin... the investment is a control gamble that motivate us to step further our welding commitment and thrash all our energy to find work... for me its always get rich or bust... I started with 100 LP cylinder in a shed now I am doing 40,000-50,000 LPG sales per month alone as main distributor for a province base area... never did regret wasting all my calculated fund for a calculated future... my 2 centLast edited by Mandau; 03-06-2008 at 10:31 AM.Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...

Reply:Money is only paper, It only has value because someone tells you it does, and you have confidence in their word. With inflation and the declining value of the dollar that 14G might not buy you a pack of smokes in 30 years. Look what happened in Germany between the 2 big wars. Inflation dropped the value of their money so bad, money was a joke. With the creeps we have running the government, it is only a matter of time before they figure a way to screw us out of our money. I see the dollar dropping and it is like someone is robbing my bank account. The amount of dollars dosen't change, but the value behind those dollars is going in the toilet. If you are going to spend it on equipment, make sure it is desireable equipment that helps you "add value" to whatever it is that you do. Don't just shine it up and have it sitting around so you can show your buddies "hey look what I got".An obsolete machine in perfect condition is worthless. When you buy equipment today you have to get your money out of it by working it. Things get obsolete very fast in the modern world. You need working capital if you are going to start a welding business for the day to day stuff. You need "rainy day" money too. so don't dump it all into equipment and have nothing left over to operate with. There are no guarantees in life in the world and time we are living in. All your money can become worthless in a matter of months. The same goes with equipment that you buy. new technology or market changes can make your tools worthless in a heartbeat. It's sad to say, but "The Guaranteed Life" was only there for our parents. They lived in a special time. With the state of the world in the 21th Century you have to think fast, seize opportunity, see the end coming, get out with your money before it ends, and go on to the next thing, whatever it is, and hit your work hard and while it is hot. What should you invest your 14G in? Who knows. The right answer changes from day to day. Just stay sharp and stay on your toes.Last edited by joethemechanic; 03-08-2008 at 09:14 AM.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:Looking back 30 years with 20/20 hindsight at the time value of money isn't really fair or accurate. After all, who knows the day they will start the backhoe at Oaklawn, just for him??Even with fate aside, I can't think of a property that could have been bought and kept since 1978 for $14,000 net, total investment (interest, insurance, management, maintenance, taxes...) that would return a 145K net today. I suppose there were a few long-shots; but then we may as well talk about the lottery or Microsoft. In 2008 what sort of safe return could be bet on with 14K? Maybe 3% or so at the most? So maybe a $10,000 gross gain in 30 years?  Ed mac wants tools and their value now. Since the 14K cash, is easily worth 30K plus right now, in 2008, why wait?Every day, shops full of top quality high end tools are being liquidated at fire sale prices. In the last year, I've seen sales where all items on Edmac's want list, -with exception of the ironworker- could have been purchased for under 4K total. Top quality USA stuff too.If it was me, and the tools aren't needed for production right now; I would start picking and choosing the best used  tool values at rock bottom cash prices, and hang on to the rest of my money; things could get worse.

Companies are cutting jobs left and right due to the lagging economy, and it wont be long before desperation sets in for a lot of people. Gas prices are also skyrocketing which is going to be reflected at the grocery store. Chaos will ensue, and you are going to need a nice secluded place to ride it out. You can live off your livestock and plant your seeds for produce. The guns and ammo are to protect yourself in the hard times to come, from those less fortunate.Miller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2

Well, at the 4 dollars a gallon they are predicting for the summer, all the factories closing, and the current price of milk, I would say start planning for some sort of hard times. It might not be as bad as Mad Max, but bracing for a second great depression might be a better way of looking at it. Reply:wish you spend your money well... I got this in an investment email from a girl..."The happiest business in all the world is that of making friends,And no investment on the street pays larger dividends,For life is more than stocks and bonds, and love than rate percent,And he who gives in friendship's name shall reap what he has spent."Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...The Grizzly Lathe sounds like a good idea.I bought an Enco 13X40 about 15 years ago and I've never bene sorry. Enco, Grizzly, Jet are all quite similar, maybe built in the same neighborhood over in China somewhere. You might also consider a small milling machine. The lathe and milling machine are the welder/faricator's best friends. When the smoke clears and the money is all gone, you would still have the lathe and milling machine. Oh yeah, if you have a wife, don't tell her. They don't understand all of this stuff.

Reply:14,000 "invested" for 30 years at some annual rate will have the purchasing power of X,which kinda depends on the inflation rate over those  same 30 years. If you put it where there is high return you accept risk.If you put it where there is low risk you accept low return, i.e. it may be "safe" but it becomes likely that it will worth be less than it is now.Investing it back into your own biz may offer both highest risk and highest potential return.Me ?I would probably invest in a half decent plasma cutting table,or make a down payment on a water cutting rig....with some assumptions about you, your biz, goals, etc.Last edited by RegB; 05-03-2008 at 12:32 PM.Reason: incomplete

Reply:I'd only buy something if you had a need... In other words, sell a job... if it takes some equipment then you'll have the $ to get what you need to make money.I thought I was gonna be a boat mechanic forever.  Then I started making some stuff, and it seems like I do more welding than anything just of late.  You never know what's around the corner.  Keep a stash for what you "don't" know. The best things in life all come on a stick!
Reply:I have been enjoying the replies. You seem to have a plan and a reason for your investment. I have always made money with my hands and brain. Stick to your plan.  For your blast cabinet look at blast all. Heavy gauge  construction made in usa. For the box and pan break National makes some quality ones also. I would try to get a heavier guage one or you could always back cut a little with a grinder if need be. For a lathe I myself would check out a used one. I have been stuck looking at hardinge or south bend. A good used one will sometimes come with tooling. I assume your sander is a belt sander/disc. I have a ryobi and I mainly use the belt on it. The best thing I have found was quality sand paper on the belt. I like the ones with a radious on the end like the radious master and a flap belt for doing edges or tubing.  My next one will be eigher a Jancy radious master the hardcore or the grit by fien. look at vansants site on them if it is useful for what you need. I am into pipe notching and welding right now if that is the direction you are heading. Some others on here might be able to help you with advise for what you are looking for not what to do with your money. I have been broke a few times but uncle sam doesnt penilize you for using your tools to make ends meet. Try reposting this with tool questions as a heading and not jealousy involved ( I mean money). Reply:Biggest question is..........."What do you want to do with all this new equipment?"Depending on that answer depends on what you purchase. As for the others saying "go to nursing school, cause ya get to work with all the young ladies..............."  I am a nurse & yes I do work with young ladies......some are pretty, most aren't ugly, but they have seen better years.  Going to nursing school will cost between $25K (2 year ASN program) to well over $100K (BSN, followed with grad school to be a Nurse Practitioner).  So going to school may not be your idea of fun.Back to what you are going to purchase, get the best quality product for the least expensive price you can.  Sometimes if the tool is to be used once a year, a person can get by with a "no-name" tool at a much reduced price.  If it's going to be used everyday, get the name brand & locally where it can be serviced if needed.Good luckMarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I guess it happen when the girls taught us men to eat the apple ( some fruit me think) and they have the better deal and we men tow the land... When going get tough, the tough get going... heard that somewhere she do 3 days a week? 4 days at home? No wonder you rather have the 6 days in a shop routine...Kiddin aside... if ye love welding then it is a bonus by itself...
