Very new to welding. Just was hoping to get some critiques on welds and volts. It takes me a while to find the right settings and was hoping to get some input. This is 3/16 purlin clips welded to 1/4 strap. I'm using 75/25 and the welder was at 326 and 21.2. First weld was drug and second was pushed. Attached Images
Reply:What machine did you get because all run a bit different. What did the setup chart under the hood advise?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Wire size?21V sounds about right for 1/4" / 3/16". Wire speed seems a bit low to me. I'd say about 375 IPM roughly for .035 solid and 75/25 vs what you are running. Even so for something like this I'd be real tempted to crank up the volts and wire speed some more since you are welding in the flat position to be on the safe side.Your push weld ( 2nd set of picts) definitely looks better than your 1st set from what I see in those picts. The bead is closer to a nice 45 deg angle compared to pict 1 where there is more material on the upper wall than the lower, and the edges are wetted in better. It's tough to tell in the picts, but the welds seem a bit on the small side. I'd want to see the legs on those welds to be between 3/16" to 1/4". I'm not sure if they are in the 2nd batch or not. It's tough to tell, but the look a bit smaller than the size I see for the thinner material in that picture..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Thanks for the advice.  The wire is .035 and am using a ThermalArc 211i.
Reply:Taking the time to remove the mill scale from the weld zone region will help increase weld bead penetration. It'll also help the puddle wet out better.   If your wire speed and voltage read outs are accurate, I  agree that your wire speed setting seems low for the voltage. 360 - 380 would be a rough IPM range to play with.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:thats a good looking weld to me and i hate you jkolb i realy want a 211i or even a 181i.
Reply:Thanks for the input. I like the 211i a whole lot. User friendly, and I enjoy learning/practicing with arc/mig/tig.
