I'm in the process of adding a gooseneck mount on my flatbed.  However I have no idea if there is a standard or general range for the distance from ball to the vertical frame of the trailers.   I'm going to weld multiple balls in different position.   Due to the 12 ft bed and liftgate, it's 7 ft 2 inches from center of axle to rear corner of flatbed.  If I buy a used trailer or fifth wheel (with gooseneck adapter.) I want to be able to pick it up and not worry about it hitting the bed when turning.   My useable range is 5' to 8'    At the minimum, it pits the ball 3'being the axle.   Once I get it home I can build extension if needed to get it over the axle.    If anyone happens to know dimensions for this or has a trailer/ fifth wheel they can measure for me I would be grateful. Reply:You need about 6 feet from the center of your gooseneck ball, to the back corner of your bed.Any more then that, and your asking for trouble.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:Here's mine. Remember now I built the gooseneck adapter. But I probably took the measurements off a factory built gooseneck trailer. That is a factory built aluminum flatbed on a 2007 1-ton Dodge dual wheel truck. Reply:Normally anything over 7' is bad. I've seen a few that where more but I generally use about 7' 6" for the distance from the hitch to the nearest point on the trailer.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:This is a 32' trailer. That is about the biggest hitch on a gooseneck trailer. Most are between 6 feet and 7 feet.Your ball on your bed should be 5 feet to the back of your bed, and 6 feet to the corner.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:Anyone have experience pulling with the ball 6 inches or more behind the center of the rear axle.  Might also be able to modify the corners like AK did on his last bed build so they are angled, saving me a few inches also.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:It's not great for them to be behind the axle but sometimes that's all you can do. I don't like it but it does happen in the real world.  Short beds are the worst since you have to be far enough from the cab to not get into it when turning. But being short they're the worst trucks to move the hitch behind the axle.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Of course there is the ideal location for a goose neck ball, then there is reality. Sometimes there are other circumstances that come into play. Anything forward of the bumper is better than a conventional set up. I'd rather have a load attached to the vehicle a foot forward of the bumper than a foot behind it. One of the other advantages of a goose neck, especially in the ag world, is the turning radius. Reply:My old rig, '96 3500 single cab 4x4, 12' flatbed, I put the kingpin closer to the back of the bed (between axle and end of bed) to pull my 5th wheel.  Never had any problems.  Not the heaviest trailer (34' with two slide outs, supposed to weigh around 14,000).  Gooseneck trailers I can pull with the standard ball setting (I think on this one it's about an inch ahead of center of axle), but had to move 5th wheel point back so nose of trailer wouldn't hit my welder...-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:I thought the most important thing was that the bed hitch does not become intimate with the rear axle.
Reply:The man that sold us a gooseneck cattle trailer and did hitch installations, said 6 to 8 inches in front of the center line of rear axle. You can look at the new F-350 and measure the distance where Ford has left a spot for hitch.
Reply:Yes, I've always used 4-6" forward the axle centerline.   Primarily I just want to put one ball far enough back to tow any stock setup.  So I can bring home a trailer that I buy. (Thus an empty trailer) or move one that doesn't belong to me.     Then I will put another ball 4" forward and modify future trailers I own to work with my setup.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
