Now that you guys help me decide/purchase the Bosch 1 1/8 Rotary Hammer, helpme decide on a reciprocating saw (corded only). Using for remodeling especially.ThanksJohnLast edited by JOHN1; 08-08-2008 at 03:18 PM.
Reply:I got a Porter Cable Tiger Saw a long time ago. I got it when the quick change first came out, so I 'spose that was around 95-96??? It has been great and a definite beast. It is still going strong, too.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:I have the same one...bought my dad one and we have both use the heck out of them.  I helped tear down a barn and all I had was a big crow bar and that porter cable tiger.  I have used it to cut side walls out of tires, cut steel before I got a band saw, cut tree limbs when I loaned out my chain saw...everything I have tossed it's way has been handled well...If it died today, I go buy another.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Do u think the Ridgid is any good also how about the Milwaukee with the "swivel" head. All my nailers and router are Porter Cable and have been great! Just wondering bout the others too!John
Reply:Oh, so you got the 1 1/8"?  Nice!  I thought you were looking at the bulldog's, but they're both great.I used to have the original Sawzall from Milwaukee.  In its day, it was unbeatable, but today, its well overshadowed by what's out there. My dad's got the PorterCable with the articulating head.  It's nice to be able to bend it around, and get into places.  The PC quick blade changes are excellent.  Lots of power to spare (11.5 A is enough to rip blades apart), but not orbital. You'll want something with at least 10amps of power (more is even better, but my original sawzall was quite a bit less), a quick blade change, and if you can find it, orbital cutting action.  Better saws also have longer strokes (my original Sawzall was 3/4", but 1 1/4" is common now).  Variable speed is now the norm, and something you want (my first was click-on click-off).  Most of the quick blade change chucks can now take a blade upside-down (nice for cutting down to a surface), and some can even hold the blade sideways (which is effectively the same thing as the saws with the rotating handles). My saw (which I absolutely love, but have no idea where to find another), is a Worx saw (now called the Worx Revolver Assault), which I got on closeout.  Its orbital action really speeds up cutting (I've used it with the green sawzall blades to cut up 6" logs, from fallen tree limbs around my house, when I didn't want to borrow a chain saw, and it was quite aggressive).I'm not going to step on the Milwaukee, and their quick change cord is nice if you're the type to kill cords, but the Porter Cable Tigersaws are every bit as good.BTW, I've also got a Dewalt cordless, and really can't say anything nice about it.  Serious overuse of plastic (in places that count).  I actually made a "welding project" out of replacing the plastic lever that unlocks the chuck, when I got tired of jamming a screwdriver inside to switch blades.  Its got nice power for trimming my juniper bushes, but that's about it (and that's the only reason I haven't dumped it on eBay).
Reply:i have been using a milwalkee for about  5 years and i have really worked the heck out of it. imho i think its one of the best around. i bought a cheap black and decker and it only lasted about a year, worked good for that year but didnt last.
Reply:Hi,Best one we have is the new model Milwaukee heavy duty model with orbital stroke option. Blade changes are a snap, just rotate the collar a quarter turn. Awesome power - high quality. The old Sawzall is still working fine, but it looks old, and I wanted to add another one. The new one is even better. I also have a newer model Makita reciprocating saw. It works well, but I did have to replace the trigger switch once already and it just feels less rugged than the Sawzall. -Ryan McEachern

Reply:I agree with the guys. I would look to any of those units. I have many Dewalt sawzalls. The gearboxes are not as strong as the old ones, I have a broken one every couple months. I will be going back to one of the above units unless Dewalt makes some changes in thier gears. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Rigid is a great company and makes great tools, though.  Never had a problem with one and they are definitely on the short list for consideration for any tool purchase!
