Welding options for jeep axle?

I am helping a friend do some axle modifications that include welding the axle tubes and adding external bracing.planning to heat and use 312ss electrode or remove Flux and use it as tig filler for axle tube weld.  For the "Truss work" Planning on mig with ER70S6 I have a small acytelene kit too but not planning on using it at this point.  I've searched around and there are lots of opinions.  I'd like to try missileweld but can't find a place to buy it by FridayComments welcome

Reply:Thanks.  I was seeing a wide variety of methods on the jeep forums myself.One axle is cast iron the other is cast steel so I'll be sure and pre and post heat the cast iron one.
Reply:They are generally not plain old cast iron, and are usually wearable.
Reply:You don't need anything fancy for the axle tubes. They're just regular old steel. For the diff or the C's you might have to use something more exotic, like Ni99 or 312 depending on how it takes. Reply:Rumor has it that Spicer's web site has repair info for their axles that dictate welding procedures.  Haven't found it myself.  Haven't looked real hard either.
Reply:Thanks.More info:   It looks like Pre heat and post heat are going to get done via my turbo heater and/or my high btu weed burner.  Both on propane.
Reply:Local welding supply had 1/16 super missile tig filler in stock so used that.  Pre heated with a turbo heater then welded and covered with blanket.  No cracks and everything went smooth.  Super missile welded easy.
