Ia it possible to weld a sturdy rail for skateboarding ect. with 7018 rods, I only have a smaw welder and cannot get a hold of a mig welder.Last edited by ehorrell; 12-19-2014 at 05:21 PM.
Reply:It sure is. Generally OSHA requires handrail to be able to withstand a 200-pound impact.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:yes its going be going to a indoor skatepark. Its going be a double barrell rail with two legs welded to flat metal.  The park doesnt have much money and only have a stick welder to work with.
Reply:I fillet weld to a flat plate should be a piece of cake. Splicing small diameter pipe with 7018 can be a challenge if you're not use to it. Reply:This is the best image i could come up with, I know the hardest part is going be where the legs come to the two pipes.  I have the confidence to do this but if you have any good tips I would appreciate it.

Reply:Id use two different flatbars not a T.     weld the vertical flatbar to the center of the tubes, then weld that assembly to the bottom flatbar.    You don't need to use 7018,  you could use some 6010/6011 for that and it would be just fineVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:its not going be that low I was thinking about doing the top part first before attaching the plates on the bottom.

Reply:Its one my of friends grandpas who is involved there. The skatepark is a christian skatepark so there is real no income to the place people chip in when they can help build new stuff.
Reply:Hey, I have made a few rails for snowboarding and skateboarding. The first one was square tubing and about 8 feet long. It had 3 legs, each had two bolt holes on the bottom to anchor to the ground. Thats the picture below. It worked good, but I have made a few bigger since then. The picture is just top show the spacing between supports, and the height off the ground.I will add another picture of my newer rail I made a few days ago tomorrow. Do you know the height, length, of the rail, and what the size of the tubes are going to be?

Reply:If you have to ask a very basic question about 7018 for a rail for skateboarding, I think it would be best to get a more experienced welder to weld it. While it is kind of an extreme sport, if that rail broke and someone was injured don't count on it they wouldn't hold you liable. As for the rail with 2 pipes on top, why not just weld a flat bar across the bottom of the 2 pipes so it's easy to mount the leg. No need to have a T section go up in between the pipes. You could stitch weld the pipes from the top side to add more strength.
Reply:It a old crank wheel Lincoln machine.  I got my certs for smaw and mig and flux, I do know how to weld but I know I dont  have has much experience as many people on here thats why I am asking on here.
Reply:Welder Dave I am asking because I do not have a mig welder to use and only have a smaw machine.  I did not think about putting a flat bar on beneath of the two pipes thank you for saying that. I just came here to make sure the 7018 will be strong enough if done right to hold up to the skaters grinding it. Im good at stick welding and dont doubt I cant do it. I thought this is was why this websites here to get questions answered and not talked down on.

Reply:Newest one. 14 feet long. Legs are in 3 feet from each end. Its 4.5" diameter pipe. Legs are angle, and the feet are 2" pipe. This is made for skiing or snowboarding, not so much skating. I might be able to find a different picture of an older rail I made, then sold. It was much better for skating. How do you plan on mounting the rail? Will it be movable, or is it going to be bolted to the ground?
Reply:we used to find a double barrel rail was better for nose grinds, k-grinds, 5-0's and etc compared to a single rail.. even nose and tail slides if it was anchored in a good waythe double barrel fit the trucks better then a single barrel but we weren't all that great... and 7018 is plenty strong to weld up a grind railwish I knew how to weld when I was sk8ing. . oh the rails we would of had
Reply:If your certified with smaw, you should know what should and shouldn't be stick welded.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:I wasn't intending to talk down to you but how can you have a SMAW certification and not know what rods are used for different applications? 7018 are the most common rods on the planet and 9 out of 10 welders would use them over MIG for something they wanted maximum strength. MIG isn't even qualified for structural welding unless you get in to spray mode. An old crank wheel Lincoln could be a lot of things. A model would help. I'd guess an Idealarc??? When people are asking for advice and don't appear to have the required skill to do a job that could potentially injure someone if it failed, they should expect to get questioned. It's no different for someone going out and buying a welder and asking how to build a trailer to haul down the highway. If you're asking really basic questions it puts your skill level in question. I was not the only one questioning your abilities.Last edited by Welder Dave; 12-20-2014 at 11:41 PM.
