I'm looking to sell 2 empty 100# propane tanks with safety caps but don't know how much they are worth. Can any one give me a ball park figure?WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:What type of 100# propane tanks?non DOT?Me!
Reply:Type? This type; the kind that's been used to provide bottled gas to my farm for cooking for over 60 years. The type that has to be transported out of the filling station in an upright manner.Last edited by 69 chevy; 09-02-2007 at 07:32 PM.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:If they are the old style neck, minus relief valve, they are worth their weight in scrap...a few dollars? If they are new style, with relief valve, brand new they are $100...so perhaps 50 or 75?John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I checked all 5 of my tanks and all have only the combination valve threaded into the top; no separate relief valve.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:If you have gotten them filled in the last couple of years they should be OK. They should have O.P.D. stamped on the valve. Or is that just for smaller tanks?Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!

Reply:I thought the original 2000 legislation didn't call for the 70 and 100 pounders to have OPD's. But I'm sure they all have to come under the pressure testing regs. The OPD valves were selling for about $25 to $28 bucks. The biggy is getting the old one out. Most of them went in with some version of thread locker. Takes a few hundred pounds to break them loose. What's it cost to have one tested??

Reply:If they're in good condition and aren't rusted out around the bottom, I'd say they're worth at least $75. I've seen $180 on a new one, but that was a while back. They don't require the OPD and most places don't check the certification stamp. I was told the recertification is inexpensive ($10 or so) and is only a visual inspection. If it ain't broke, I'll break it!
Reply:I believe your best bet here is to check the local fill stations and see if they mandate ONLY filling the bottles with the new bleed off valve. Our states guides filling stations to ONLY fill the new type of bottles. If he were to sell these to an unknowing buyer, they might come back angry that they can't be filled. http://www.dli.state.pa.us/landi/cwp...a=185&q=213503Here is an excerpt from Penn. State regulations: "The regulations shall be such as are reasonably necessary for the protection of the health, welfare and safety of the public and persons using such materials and utilize the National Fire Protection Association industry standards." They follow the NFPA guidelines, so I wouldn't be suprised if the old bottles aren't supposed to be filled any longer.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Transported upright? What a perfect use for a lift gate! I think around here that size tank is exempt from needing an OPD. Cracking the old valves loose is the chore if and when you need to. We have a round, clamping strap jig, that is welded to the steel table for holding tanks, then we use a t-bar wrench that was slapped together with scrap of assorted sizes and shapes to fit the valve body. I can change a valve by myself with this set up.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:you may wanna check out the backyard foundry web ring...a lot of the guys use propane for their furnaces and have problems with the newer valves post em for sale but be sure to warn em that they need to check their propane supplier to see if theyll fill em first...the valves are meant to shut down if the flow of propane reaches to high of a lvl..i.e a broken line or valve under normal use but in a forge or furnace they limit the effectivness of the burner jetsbrand new from tractor supply the hundrted pounders go for 100 dollars but if ya get em to the right person they may be worth gold
Reply:Thanks for the replies. I think I'll offer them to the guy on Craigslist looking for them for $100 for the pair.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else! |
