In an effort to be like Stickman....... While in the Oval Office I happended upon what I think is a short hood about an hour from me.....Not knowing for sure...... I'm wondering what the thoughts are from you....... Is this what they call a "short hood"....?Any ideas on what alternative fuel means.....?Is the price right? It's not a $350 SA200 (Stick...... You suck......) but its one I can afford.....Here is the CL pic.......Thoughts.......? Reply:Not a short hood, no, that's a "junior." It is either the 180 or a 200. Different series than the SAs.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:I have one of those - it is not a shorthood but it is a small version of an SA-200.  The name plate probably says Shield-Arc 200 (or 180 or 250)They have air cooled motors and mine is hand crank only.  I see that one has a starter. They work fine but are more of a novelty in my opinion.  I bought mine just cause I liked it Oh, they do not make power for a grinder.Dave J.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 08-08-2013 at 08:19 PM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Ok...thanks for the input.......Sounds like it may run 1/8 ... 7018 ok........ Maybe 3/16....... Likely all copper....Can "alternative fuel" be converted to something useful....?Pic looks like DC 250.......I'm starting to lean toward it as a first machine........Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Oops, I was wrong - it's a Lincwelder DC-250-ASIf you buy it you'll have to be prepared to make parts while fixing it - I doubt there are new parts available.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I expect you could resell it if you don't like it or just don't use it much.  With a little clean up and some fresh paint you might even make money on it.  I would buy it if it was around here.
Reply:A little update on this machine.....I just spoke to the current owner.... we talked for about 20 or 30 minutes about it..... a marathon conversation by my standards.......The machine will run on gas....... by "alternative fuels" he means it runs on carb cleaner..... which isn't really "alternative" but more an indication that there are other issues.....As stated in his posting, it does have fuel system problems.... primarily due to rust in the tank...... he says he doesn't run it very often and so it gets really hard to start.... and he needed 110V outlet.... so he became frustrated with the machine overall.........He did comment on what I already knew...... the starter is aftermarket because it was hand crank originally.......It is a 250 amp machine........QUESTIONS.....1) How hard is it to fix a fuel system problem as stated above......?2) I am wondering if I will outgrow this unit inside of months........ making it not worth it...... since I really want a SA-200...... (this is a thought for me to ponder.....)......Also..... I have to find a truck to use.... he is all the way up in Liberty Hill (West of Georgetown) and over an hour from me......... All i have is the darn Xterra...... I really need a dag gum truck again......... maybe my neighbor will let me borrow his..........Anyway.... that's the update so far.....Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Depending on how far the tank is gone, many are using these type of products for restoration of rusty fuel tanks.http://www.eastwood.com/paints/under.../gas-tank.htmlhttp://www.por15.com/Fuel-System-Restoration_c_17.htmlOnly when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:Are you planning to do mobile welding?  If your not I would certainly not buy an engine drive to listen to and piss off all your neighbors when you can buy a good old copper 220 volt unit to put in your garage.  I assume stick is new to you?  Lots and lots of welders out there that will weld fine that aren't SA200's, unless your trying to be a pipe welder or something I'd stand back and see if that is really the best choice when you take out the novelty part.  If you don't have 220 in your garage there are some capable 110 inverters that would likely more than handle your craft welding.
Reply:I don't think you would easily out grow that unless you were working pipeline, and planing to do a lot of air arcing. I have the little brother with the 2 cyl, and it will burn 3/16.Bruce DeLaetHeavy Equipment Mechanic and Welder1948 SA-200 short hood1949 LincWelder 1801963 SA-200 red faceMiller S-32-P

I plan to buy a flat bed truck and a machine.......While the SA 200 is somewhat of a novelty..... I would rather have that than a brandy new Miller........I like old stuff.....I have so many reasons why this is true........
Reply:Unless you plan on getting into hard core rig welding, like ironwork or pipeline welding, it's unlikely you'd "outgrow" that machine from a stick welding standpoint.  I have an old 200 amp Miller engine drive, and there's only one time where I found myself thinking "gee, I really wish I had a bigger machine", and that was doing a couple hundred 2F lap welds on half inch material (interesting story, BTW) with my machine running balls to the wall with 5/32 7018.  I have a fresh can of 3/16 7028 in the shop, which would have sure sped things up, if I had more power at my disposal. That's also not to say you won't eventually want something that is already set up to do TIG and Wirefeed processes.  And AC is always handy if you do a lot of field repair work.  Never know when something is going to be magnetized from years of misuse.  Plus if you want accessory power, you'll either need to lug around a generator, or retrofit it with a large alternator and an inverter. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
