Reply:Then I set up to do some 7018 Vertical Up........I struggle with this..........I fight both undercut and arc blow.........PICS...... Reply:I also need to practice my tie in's....... they give me fits.....I used some of my shorties to work on that part.... Never mind the enormous arc strike in pic 3..............PICS..... Reply:Your intense. I admire your dedication. Your wife must be more understanding than mine. What's arc blow? I could Google it but I prefer how people here explain it.Bruce

Reply:Try running the 7018 at 100 amps and letting the work piece cool between passes. That's what I had to do to get threw 3G in school. It was the hardest of all the plate certs in my opinion. The 6013 looks good. Might try a little shorter arc length to reduce spatter some. Good job man!

Reply:Arc Blow......A multitude of sailor words to be spewed while under the hood..... along with various body contortions to try to correct it.....I usually wait several minutes between passes.....I run about 115 amps while going up.... about 10 less than normal............Regarding the 6013......... I run the 1/8th at about 100 amps... I bury the arc........I don't like those rods... they were from dad's stash........ I'm glad to be rid of them......Now if I can just unload the 15 lbs of 6011's I have (I hate those even more......).......Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Originally Posted by jamesyarbrough6013s ain't that bad. Some spatter can be expected I was just throwing out ideas. I like to run them about 120 and really lay the rod back to push back the slag.Give 100 amps a shot with the vertical....worked for me anyway
Reply:1/8 th lohi is a big rod to try and use up hill. I see people do this every day they think they can do it but it takes lots of practice and someone to guide you. I'm going to tell you what I tell everyone else. Get some 3/32 lohi run those. If there is anything I know its stick welding processes. Specializing in lohi applications. The 3/32 is more under your control and can do just as much if not.better than 1/8th. I STRONGLY emphasise that you practice with these then move up. I ONLY use 1/8, 5/32, 3/16 lo hi on rollout welds and really really thick pipe, .500 wall or greater.

Reply:Originally Posted by jamesyarbroughMan its where the arc wonders instead of going where u want it. The flux will burn off the side or something and then (especially in up hill) it starts arcing to the puddle instead of where u aim it. It really sux with open root butt joints because it will favor one side instead of both. When using 6011s for an open root butt it gets really bad, that's why 5P plus are so high dollar.Heat build up and rod quality directly effect arc blow.

Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveJames, this is not directed only at your post.I'm not sure why I keep seeing people say to lay the rod way back on 6013.  Using an incorrect rod angle to "push back the slag" is not the right way to do things.  It's an indication that you're too cold, too slow or both.Laying back the rod overheats the puddle and you'll get spatter (BB's jumping out) like when you run too hot with correct rod angle. It also reduces penetration. On fillet welds I run 1/8" 6013 about 135 amps AC with a nearly straight rod angle.  Drag on plate and take a nap  LOLEnd rant On 7018 1/8" vertical up.  I did some experimenting last year with amps on 3/8" beveled plate.Turns out with changes in speed only, 95 amps to 135 amps were all workable - but with practice.  Straight rod angle or maybe 5 degrees up.Dave J.
Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveI disagree on almost every point. The flux burning off one side does not cause arc blow.  It's what happens as a result of arc blow.(in this case chicken-or-the-egg has an answer)The rod quality cannot stop magnetic fields from forming. With 6011 you should use AC current to nearly elliminate the problem. Not exactly heat build up - the arc wants to stay with the puddle instead of advancing to a cooler area.Ok, I've stated some very specific ideas on the internet (yikes) Let the flames begin Dave J.

Reply:Originally Posted by jamesyarbroughRod quality has everything to do with it.case and point: our class was all doing 3G and failing visual inspections. Instructors say its an epidemic.  Just so happens someone tryed to save a few bucks and ordered radnoir rods. When we got the Excaliburs in everyone's problems went away. I can tell you from personal experience that the radnoirs were arc blowing much more than the lincolns. And when I let the piece cool off it helped a lot as well. But that's just my experiences

As for everyone failing tests, its at a school of welding noobs, they don't know how to use rods other than the best/easiestOriginally Posted by jamesyarbroughShooot I still don't know how to use rods other than the best and easiest. You saw what happens when I run hobart 7018s vertical. Looks like a mess of stalagtites!  Haha
