i'm looking to buy a mag drill.I do about 50% steel and 50%316 stainless workDo the HSS annular cutters work decently on 316 and is there any precautions i should be aware of?Like cutting speed.Or are there other cutter material that i should use that will work better?TIAG
Reply:I have only used standard HSS drill bits to drill 316 SS. Used slow speed with approx. .012" to .015" chip load per rev. These were holes no smaller that about 3/4" if I remember correctly. I do remember flood coolant was absolutely necessary. Also I hope you are not planning to be drilling any holes in 316 stainless steel with a Mag Drill.
Reply:thanks for the reply, ill remember to use coolant.i'll also remember to clamp the 316 to some CS and mag the drill to the CSGG
Reply:Jetbroach, and Haugen sites have the suggested speeds you need."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:OH MAN i had a safety campaign (well still in the middle of it) but i had to make 100 1.5x1.5x .625 thick i cant remember if the holewas .500 or .625 but hole thur the middle tapped 1/4-20 thu the side, all outta 304L slow drill speed, lotta oil, took me about 30hours to drill, mill and tap them... 316l isnt that bad to work... just watch your heat, if you heat it, it will work harden... and then well good luck... carbide end mills have trouble going thur work hardend ss. |
