Hey all,If you were to choose between a welding bed or a welding trailer, which would fit you best in what you do?~Josh
Reply:I asked this same question a couple weeks ago.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=24277Where I work they have always kept the welder, leads, torch and tools in an enclosed trailer. Since I am now the "field guy" I put everything in the bed and I love it.I guess it depends on the type of work your doing. It always seems like I need to bring material with me and it won't fit in the trailer so somebody has to follow with another trailer or I can put everything in the bed and tow it myself.Personally I cant stand having it in/on a trailer. Some jobs I go to the trailer doesn't fit, result in me pushing the welder to within range of the work.Yup
Reply:personally, i wouldn't trade our cube van for either.   we can carry 14' of stock with the door shut, the welder is dry,  tools can be kept on the truck all the time, and fuel/tools doesn't tend to walk off.mine you, we keep alot more then welder, torches, and rods.   we stock tools from 1/4" up to 4", drills, grinders, fall arrest, cones, ropes, wet weather gear...........   basically anything you might need when out on a jobBill BerryKeith Berry & Son Ltd.machine work, and weldingBear River Vollunteer FD
Reply:The trailer we have does have alot of the things you mentioned, we cant carry that much stock though.I guess I haven't gotten into a situation where I wish I had all that with me yet.I'm sure it will happen. We'll see how I feel when the snow flies.Yup
Reply:i have a 3/4 ton service truck. love it. plenty of room for all my tools and a miller welder and an emglo compressor. just a pain to tarp the welder and compressor.plenty tough and union made.
Reply:For what I do, a trailer would be a major pain.  I don't weld everyday, in fact there are times I might go a month without striking an arc.  But I most generally drive my welding rig every day, and have it on the job with me if we need the torch, need electric, or I rip shanks off my trackhoe bucket. Reply:holy cow, thats a lotta load fer that lil' dodge!plenty tough and union made.
Reply:Actually, until I lost 3rd gear, it pulled it great.  BUT, the fact that it's putting out around 450 HP has a lot to do with that.  I havn't had time yet, but I've got a 6 speed I'm going to replace the 5 speed with.
Reply:I have had my welder on a trailer and on the truck.  I prefer it on the truck.  It does make the truck useless for anything else.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I drive a Jeep Cherokee, so the trailer is a great option for me.Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:Truck!  I have a couple of trailer mounted welders for when I need more than one but for the most part I love having it on the truck. Its not a welders body though.  Just a Knapweed 14' utility body with a vantage 500 bolted down in the back.  The LN-25 fits nicely into the body and all the other tools go along nicely also.  If I need theirs a 12K hitch on the rear for any tag trailer towing needs.  I have pulled a 6K hyster forklift or a 32' scissor lift on my Walton tilt deck behind it to a job site.theirs $20,000 in hand tools alone in the truck and it comes home with me every night.    Its definitely not my daily driver but it does great by me and perfect for what I do.  Also the truck has tool theft coverage on it where if it was trailer mounted my insurance agent said I would have one hell of a time getting insurance.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:if the truck was my only truck i would use a trailer."The Name of Jesus is a lightning rod because The Name represents the division of life between good and evil, God and Satan, light and darkness, righteousness and sin, heaven and hell"

Reply:Over the years, I have very much preferred engine drives on trucks, I run with 500 amp plus machines.   Working a lot in California, however, seems like every truck I own, will be soon regulated out of existence by 2010.  It just don't make sense, in this point in my career, and my life, to spend $40 - $50,000 on a new truck, just to satisfy the Cal Air Resources Board.  Or spend even MORE, to upgrade my old trucks, to their new standards.   Starting to make more and more sense, to revert back to a trailer-based setup, pull it with anything, even though it'll be a major PITA to get anything done efficiently ,,,,,,,,,   Stupid rules, allow me to make as much pollution as I want, as long as I'm doing it with a truck under 14,000 GVWR.
