Here is my problem, buy a new Thermal Arc 186, or Used Precision Tig 225.  Always used an old lincoln transformer machine for my tig work.  In the market to upgrade like the idea of the portability of the Thermal Arc 186 with all the options, but also like the idea of a precision tig.  What are your guys thoughts?  Budget is $2000, think I can pick up the Lincoln for $1500 ready to go with a bottle and all the goodies.  If I buy the thermal arc, i'm gonna buy it from my LWS and it would be around $1900 with tax.  I know I can get it cheaper online but sometimes it's worth the extra cash for the customer service of my local shop.  I'm just kinda iffy on an inverter machine.

Reply:Don't really have  space restrictions, but i do like the idea of the thermal arc being portable.  I do mostly mild steel, a little bit of stainless, and aluminum.  Nothing real thick. 1/4 steel is usually as thick as I go, and 3/16" aluminum.  I just some fab work on the side, but I'm leaning towards being able to go portable.
Reply:What kind of power do you have available to you in your shop?  That was my biggest issue.  If I had 100 amps, I'd still have my Syncrowave.I love TA products, but for durability and reliability, it's gonna be hard to beat that PT225.  Pulse, EN/EP adjustment and AC freq are fun to play with, but their true usefulness is limited.Look at Zap.  He doesn't even have a Squarewave machine and turns out quality welds day in and day out.I'd have to vote for the tranny machine in this case.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:The true usefulness of the extended range on cleaning and wave balance(inverter) is more time on the electrode  negative side. Meaning on AC output the power can be greater amp for amp. with a inverter. Pretty much a tie on AC output between a PT-225 and Thermal 186. The setting on the front of the inverter machine, like wave balance/freq will not change the amp draw like a standard transformer machine. More wave balance to the electrode negative, will draw quite a bit more amps out of the wall. Advantage inverter again. If you are using a air cooled torch, the Inverter will put more heat into the work, then into a torch on AC output. Depending on settings again. Those are real benefits along with a narrower cleaning zone, and way longer electrode life. The PT-225 will have a pretty crummy arc on AC unless you use a balled end on the tungsten. Pulse adjustment is a lot more range on a inverter too. I used both, and bought a Thermal..Puddle formation is always quicker on a inverter machine too.(AC) I generally like the PT-225, ( have used a brand new  PT-185  and PT-225) but not as well as my Thermal -186. I sold off my excellent fully loaded Esab 252 to get more garage space that the inverter provided. Made a package deal with my other multiprocess Esab machine. That machine was a huge improvement in output over a PT-225, and had real advantages when over .250 aluminum. 320 amps AC is a huge advantage and 230 amps is about nothing.Last edited by Brand X; 05-08-2013 at 06:49 AM.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:You can run the inverter from a generator if you are portable.I would go inverter.Last edited by shovelon; 05-08-2013 at 08:48 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Get the precision tig!
Reply:precision tig got sold out from underneath me, ordered the thermal arc 186 from my local guy.  Hope i'm happy with it
