Hey guys. Quick question. On my Dynasty 200 dx. I'm trying to save for some schedule 80 pipe and I need to know what I should set my dig setting to in order to replicate what I will encounter at a welding test/ on the job.  I'm looking to eventually get into pipe welding and maybe boilmakers union or structural etc.  I don't want to  be practicing with a dig setting that will not be anything like I may encounter on a welding test. I have no other welding experience except for the Dynasty and a miller mig welder.     Other machines that don't have a DIG setting, what should I set my dig to that will replicate that machine?Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450
Reply:I think I would practice with, and without using the dig. I look at dig / arc force as a luxury, but it is not needed at all. For open root with 6010, I turn the dig / arc force all the way up. For running 7018, or regular welding with 6010 I turn it way down, if not off.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Everyone is different on machine settings. I almost always turn the dig wide open on any machine any rod.
Reply:I've only been stick welding for about 6 months the machines at work are diesel drive lincoln welders they don't have a dig setting just 2 knobs a main amp and the fine tuner so what is the dig yall are talking about haven't been in the stick welding long enough to have seen one I've heard people talk about it please explain.
Reply:Different machines have different arc characteristics. Some have what might be called a "stiff" arc while others might have a "soft" arc. A machine with a dig function will allow the user to adjust the arc quality some what based on how they would prefer to weld. It's a bit difficult to explain if you haven't had the opportunity to weld using the same process with different machines..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Some machines can have  "dig" as a function of the two range dials. High course setting and low fine would be low dig and low course range would be high dig
Reply:I know you are looking for a answer but there isn't one, if that makes sense, theres all kinds of variables, usually your machine is 300ft away up three floors no time in budget to go change it

Reply:Okay so on my dynasty it doesnt seem that there is a way to turn off the dig, you just adjust it high or low. So unless im wrong and there is a way to turn off dig, turning down dig all the way to zero is turning off the dig? Correct? The dig setting really makes a huge difference in my welding ability so this is why im asking so i can get an idea of what i might expect on a test.Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450
Reply:One problem with testing, you never know what kind, or condition the welding machine will be. You have to be able to rock n roll with anything they put you in front of. I can't tell you how many wire feed tests I've taken, when I walked into the testing booth there is duct tape over the gauges. First part of the test is to set the machine within the wire manufacturer's specs. If not, you get to go home early.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Here is what Jody says about dig and arc force.http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/arc-force.htmlThe way I understand it, high dig means that the current goes up as the arc length/voltage gets low.    This helps prevent sticking the rod to the work.   I think that my Syncrowave 200 has that control, but I don't do a lot of stick welding, so I have not played with it.Sculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:Thanks, but I know what dig/arc force is. My problem is that I have only used the Dynasty 350 and 200dx as a newer welder. So when I go in for a welding test, I don't want to have practiced with my dynasty on a 75+ dig setting and be testing with a machine that has no dig adjustment. I realize the chance of testing on a non dig/arc force adjustable machine is pretty high, so my question is still : a welder with no dig/arc force, where do I set my dig on my dynasty to replicate a welder with no dig/arc force adjustment?   Set the dig to 0?   Doing this makes it real easy to stick the electrode and makes it pretty hard for me to weld, seems like that is still the case even running the amps kinda hot.Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450
