I have been looking to purchase a cordless grinder.  I have read about all them just looking for personal review if anyone has used one.Been considering this one from Makita I like that it spins 10,000 rpm.http://www.makita.com/menu.php?pg=pr...det&tag=BGA452Last edited by bullet4263; 06-26-2008 at 07:42 PM.
Reply:I used one a jet fuel terminal pipeline job I was on. I couldn't stand it. The rechargeable batteries don't last very long and when you only have so long to weld a joint together, you have to expect that rechargeable battery to last. If it is just for welding around the garage, I would say go for it. Pipeline line job, nope.Live each day to the fullest because tomorrow may never come.
Reply:I have that makita one.  Bought for sharpening digging bars for roots when digging for fences.  Works great in short bursts, but when I used it for grinding/ cutting welds, it would overheat and drain the battery in under three to five minutes continuous use.  And that battery would be steaming hot.
Reply:I've used the Dewalt. If it was for occasional use OK but to do anything serious no. I can see using it to cut bolts or to maybe clean off some paint, but if I needed to grind bevels or V out a joint I'd grab the corded one every time.
Reply:i wonder why it does that ??? the right angle dear head ??
Reply:I have that makita one myself.  and as stated it is ok.  It will never replace a corded grinder in my opinion.    I bought my to use while I was welding up on top of some grain bins and I didn't want to pull an extension cord with me.  it worked fine for light grinding, but that's about it.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:They are good for putting a razor wheel in and cutting off a lock for a buddy who lost his keys, or a quick prep/finish on a kitchen repair. Other that that the battery dosent last that long. They have ther place in your arsenal, but main line work is'nt it.Last edited by TozziWelding; 06-26-2008 at 11:54 PM.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Have any you guys used the Milwakee cordless grinder I think it is a 28 volt piece.Just wondering if it lasts any longer. Not really looking to replace regular grinder but as much time as possible might be better. Thanks for all the info
Reply:I haven't used the milwakee, but use quite a few cordless drills and such. The biggest problem with the big batteries is weight. They get heavy fast. Since portability is the strong point of the cordless tools the extra weight kinda defeats the purpose somewhat. I try and stick with tools that all use the same batteries. All mine are Dewalts now. All the batteries regardless of size 12v-18v will charge in the same charger so I can use all 6 chargers to charge batteries for any tool if I am running thru batteries fast. Any tool that dies now gets replaced with an 18v model if available to try and cut down the number of different batteries I need to keep charged.A couple of thoughts on cordless tools. Be sure and get 2 batteries minimum. If you are serious get at least 3-4 and have 2 chargers. Get in a habit of always putting the battery on charge as soon as you get done or when you reach the job. Dead batteries are useless and the biggest problem with these type of tools. I have all my batteries numbered. That way I know which ones were in the gun and which were in the charger. I also store the charged batteries in a seperate location on the truck from the full ones, that way I always know which is useable when I get to the job and which were used at the end of the day yesterday so I can toss them on to charge rightaway. With 8-12 of 3 different sizes, batteries this maks a huge difference. The new truck is getting an inverter later this year so my batteries can stay stored in the chargers on the truck and avoid the dead battery thing more hopefully. I had one of the 12v car charger ones but they are just too much to have more than one. I can get an inverter to hook up to a seperate battery for less.Hope this may help someone. Good luck.

Reply:It counts only if you run it off those nifty bottles of compressed Nitrogen they sell at Lowes and Home Despot, for use with brad nailers and such.  You know, the ones that come with cool belt holster. Reply:I just bought the Milwaukee V28 two weeks ago.  I think May 15th was when they just became available.  Best price I found was www.ToolUp.com   I have the other V28 tools and bought the tool only. I am very happy with it, the sawzall, hammer drill, impact wrench, metal and wood saws, and the rotary hammer.  When I bought some tools that I use the most, I bought tool only and since the kits come with 2 batteries, I have plenty of batteries.  A three bay charger is nice to have, also.  All Milwaukee tools and batteries have a 5-year guarantee.  Only company with that, I believe.  Battery records first charge date and warranty starts. Unlike NiCads, the Li-Ion can be charged and used immediately, no need to cool down as no heat is generated during use or charging. The Lithium Ion batteries from  Milwaukee feature lithium manganese chemistry, which has been field proven to be the most powerful and practical for professional power tool applications on the market today. This technology was developed by Milwaukee in partnership with a leading global battery company to produce the first heavy duty Li-Ion battery for use in high amp draw applications.  If I can, I will try to answer your questions.-----------------------------------THE FIVE BIGGEST MYTHS ABOUT CORDLESS TOOLS.( AND HOW THE NEW V28 DESTROYED THEM ALL. )MYTH NO. 1 MORE POWER MEANS MORE WEIGHT. NOT ANYMORE.V28 Lithium-Ion can hold more energy in a lighter battery pack than current NiCdor NiMH batteries. Lithium-Ion offers compact power without increasing the weight,to provide awesome power and up to twice the run time of an 18 volt.MYTH NO. 2 CORDLESS TOOLS GRADUALLY LOSE POWER DURING USE. NOT ANYMORE.Unlike NiCd and NiMH batteries, Milwaukee’s revolutionary V28 Lithium-Ionbatteries maintain their power level throughout their entire discharge cycle. The last use feels as powerful as the first. This means increased productivityper battery charge since you can work faster, even at the end of a charge.MYTH NO. 3 CORDLESS CIRC SAWS ARE ONLY FOR OCCASIONAL USE. NOT ANYMORE.V28 tools have been designed to work exclusively with Milwaukee’s newHigh-Power V28 motor. This motor powers tools that perform, feel and soundmore like corded tools. Try it yourself. Cut a 45º bevel cut in pressure treatedlumber. The V28 Circular Saw cuts faster, lasts longer and with more powerthan any 18 or 24 volt cordless saw currently on the market.C E R T I F I E D T E S T I N G B Y I N D E P E N D E N T T E S T L A B ( I N T E R T E K )MYTH NO. 4 THERE’S NO WAY TO TELL HOW MUCH POWER IS LEFT IN A BATTERY. NOT ANYMORE.The exclusive battery fuel gauge displays remaining run time so you know beforestarting a job if you have enough power to finish it or if you need to get a fullycharged pack before climbing a ladder or squeezing into a crawlspace. The batteryfuel gauge eliminates the guesswork of which battery pack has the most juiceleft allowing you to get more done, faster (or get home sooner).MYTH NO. 5 CORDLESS BATTERIES HAVE A MEMORY EFFECT. NOT ANYMORE.The V28 Lithium-Ion battery chemistry, combined with its Performance OptimizingCircuit, provides a memory-free battery pack. Recharge them anytime you want withno memory effect. V28 provides up to 2.5 times the lifetime output compared to 18volt NiCd batteries.------------------------Other battery infoIndustry Leader in Lithium-Ion Technology Sets a Higher Performance StandardBROOKFIELD, WI – Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation recently announced a new limited warranty for all of its V™ Technology Lithium-Ion batteries, extending coverage for up to 2,000 charge cycles or five (5) years from the date of purchase/first charge.Milwaukee's research indicates that under tough professional use, most 18V Ni-Cad batteries last 450 cycles or less. With their 2,000 charges/5 year limited warranty providing more than three times the charge cycles from a typical Ni-Cad, Milwaukee sets a new benchmark in performance expectations for Li-Ion batteries in the power tool market.“A lot of promises are made about the long lasting, fade-free power available over the lifetime of a Li-Ion battery, but you can only back what you can measure,” says David Selby, director of engineering and new product development for Milwaukee Electric Tool. “All of our V™ Technology products feature ‘smart battery’ diagnostics, which record the first date of use, the number of completed charge cycles and other useful information. This limited warranty allows Milwaukee dealers to provide even better support for their customers.”Selby adds that the new warranty can more than double the original two year, 1,000 charges coverage period Milwaukee Li-Ion battery users previously enjoyed. Under the new warranty, which retroactively covers all Milwaukee V28 and V18 batteries (available in August 2006), users will receive an additional 1,000 charges or three years of warranty coverage that is pro-rated against the amount of use. If a claim is made during this extended period, the customer will be able to obtain a new battery at a discounted price based on the amount of usage beyond two years or 1,000 charges. If a battery fails during the first two years or 1,000 charges, the customer receives a replacement battery free of charge.“As the first-to-market leader in Lithium-Ion technology for power tools, Milwaukee will continue to raise industry standards for cordless performance and reliability,” says Selby. “Professionals push our tools to the limit every day, and we’re proud to be able to back them up with such a heavy-duty warranty.”About Milwaukee V™ TechnologyMilwaukee’s exclusive integration of chemistry, cell design and circuitry, charging system and tool design have all been optimized to create V™ Technology – the superior Lithium-Ion battery solution. Milwaukee features lithium manganese chemistry, which has been field proven to be the most powerful and practical for professional power tool applications on the market today. This technology was developed by Milwaukee in partnership with a leading global battery company to produce the first heavy duty Li-Ion battery for use in high amp draw applications. The award-winning V™ Technology platform is available in an expanding range of voltages and products for professionals seeking fade-free power, longer runtimes and equal or less weight than 18V NiCad battery powered tools. Due to a patent-pending performance-optimizing circuit, V™ Technology batteries are able to operate at peak performance under extreme conditions such as hot or cold temperatures and withstand battery heating due to heavy use. In addition, Milwaukee’s Li-Ion batteries feature a built-in fuel gauge so users always know how much run time is available without needing to place it on a charger.------------------------------------------------------------During the 40 plus years since the cordless power tool category was first established, the battery technology that powers these products has seen numerous advancements. However, none of them have taken cordless power to a level matching that of corded products as was originally the intention. That is, until now. The introduction of Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation’s V28™ lithium ion technology represents a quantum leap in cordless performance and a revolution within the category altogether. There’s no denying the fact that cordless power tools are popular. In fact, over the past 15 years the cordless market has grown at twice the rate of the overall power tool market. Despite this, shortcomings in performance and run time have caused cordless power tools outside of drills to remain, for the most part, occasional use products.Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries are the original and still most popular choice in the category. The 18 volt NiCd has reached what most consider its practical limit in terms of power output at a comfortable weight. (Twenty-four volt models haven’t been widely accepted due to their heft and relatively small performance gain over 18 volts.) Until the introduction of V28, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) had been considered the new frontier in power tool battery technology mainly because it offered slightly more power in a pack that contained no cadmium. However, NiMH has not caught on due to its higher cost and cold weather intolerance. With 28 volts of power, the new V28 technology adds no extra battery weight yet delivers increased power and up to twice the run time of traditional 18 volt products. In addition, V28 technology continues to deliver its high performance in a wider temperature range than NiCd, operating in hot or cold environments. Beyond its performance benefits, the V28 battery is more eco-friendly than most other high powered rechargeable batteries because it contains no cadmium and therefore does not have to be recycled in many states. Milwaukee still encourages the recycling of all rechargeable battery packs.“Professional tradespeople have been waiting for a product like V28 for a very long time. This line has been built to make our end-users more productive and efficient than they thought possible with a cordless product,” notes Joseph Smith, vice president of marketing at Milwaukee. “Because of the countless benefits and productivity enhancements that V28 offers, we expect this line to significantly grow our market share in the cordless category as soon as it’s out of the gate.”Because V28 marks the first time that lithium ion technology has been perfected for high current draw applications, power tools that were once unavailable in cordless versions can now go unplugged. One such example is the V28 band saw, the first cordless band saw powerful enough for every day professional use. However, the impact of V28 technology stretches beyond power tools. “This is truly a technological revolution,” adds Smith. “This revolutionary breakthrough has significant applications in categories such as lawn and garden, home appliances, even military uses.”“To make lithium-ion capable of powering high current draw applications, Milwaukee’s researchers turned to lithium manganese,” says Gary Meyer, R & D Manager at Milwaukee. “A Milwaukee team of research and product engineers working with our partner E-One Moli Energy of Canada optimized a cell to deliver high power and long run time while providing better than expected battery life. The partnership developed and perfected a larger sized battery cell than traditionally seen in today’s common lithium-ion applications. Milwaukee added an encapsulated robust electronic circuit, resulting in what we call a ‘smart battery’ and has done an excellent job in developing the V28™ battery that delivers up to 2 ½ times the work of an 18 volt NiCd battery while weighing slightly less.”Milwaukee is launching the V28 line at an opportune time with the demand of power and hand tools forecasted to increase by 4.7% to $14.2 billion in 2005, and $15.4 billion by 2007. However, the company does not expect NiCd technology to disappear anytime soon. In fact, because of NiCd’s affordability and popularity, Milwaukee will continue to invest in research and development of its NiCd product offering while simultaneously growing the V28 line.Available in the second quarter of 2005, the V28 line is expected to generate significant growth and profitability opportunities for participating Milwaukee Electric Tool distributors nationwide. And because the V28 technology has numerous patents pending, the lithium ion power tool revolution is one distributors can leverage for some time. “The 18 volt power tool market is highly price competitive,” notes Thomas Blue, national sales director for Milwaukee. “The V28 line gives distributors a unique opportunity to sell productivity solutions to their customers.”Initially the V28 line will include a band saw, hammer-drill, circular saw, Sawzall® reciprocating saw, impact wrench, work light and battery charger. More tools are on the drawing board for early 2006 introduction, including a hard-hitting rotary hammer. Products will be available individually or in a combo kit in the second quarter of 2005.Last edited by TxDoc; 07-01-2008 at 10:04 PM.
Reply:I have the v28 Milwaukee. I love it , especially at the junkyard with a cutting wheel., cutting through u bolts,  brake cables, or any rusty bolts. Batteries last a little longer that I thought they would.
Reply:Sorry. Except for very short term use battery power tools are not in my vocabulary. Lets take your battery powered tool and bevel 1/2 in plate for a foot or so. Wrong tool for the job you betcha. So just keep in mind the limitations of the battery dudes and also keep in mind their usefull places as well.Last edited by Fred Paul Jones; 08-16-2008 at 11:46 PM.
