Trying my hand at welding some .040" aluminum. I am using a 1 1/2% lanthinated tungsten. I noticed that the arc doesn't seem to come off of the point as it does with a 3/32" tungsten running at higher amps. Is this just the way it is or do I need to have a smoother grind on the tip???
Reply:It takes lanthanated a loooooong time to melt back, if it does at all. Treat it like thoriated and keep it pointed. If it does not splinter it WILL melt back, and then you will hate it.Good luck.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:You didn't actually mention what diameter your 1.5%La tungsten is.  Is it 0.040"?  If so, then yup the arc tends to spread out just as tad more with thinner tungstens, but the smoother the tip is ground, the lesser extend to which this happens.  Perhaps try a 1/16" diameter tungsten. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig!
