Hoist repair with square tube hinge

I've used square tube to make hinges in some circumstances for a long time. It works great where there is little movement and corrosion is a problem. Just put a round shaft on a square tube and it works as good as round, but the corners keep it open enough to keep it from seizing. Here are the pics before. This is a hoist under a tree trimmer's truck. I've fixed many of these over the years, it seems that hoist owners are rarely also grease gun owners. LOL This shaft is mostly the one that twists off since in a hoist it's the one with the most movement. This was a job that my friend and ace mechanic Joe took it thinking he could just pound out the twisted shaft and repair it. One look told me that that would be incredibly hard to do, you could heat and pound on that for hours and still not get it. Attached Images
Reply:Please don't hit me too hard on the crappy prep on this job. I normally don't do this badly and I didn't even realise just how bad it was til I looked at the pics after. My only excuse is that I had the worst case of the flue I've had in years with a 102* + fever. But it turned out ok and is working great. I started by cutting out the old pivot. Fit up had some challenges because the round was larger than the flat side of the square so there was some filling to do in the middle of the tube. Also it was hard to get at with having to work from under the truck and over the differential or lying on the tires and frame. I used 2 1/2" x 1/4" square tube with a 2" heavy wall for the shaft. Cut the tube in 3 pieces and welded a long section in the lower hoist half and 2-3" long pieces for the top hoist section. Attached Images
